10 locations for selling livestock via mobile vehicles in Jeddah during Hajj

Regulatory efforts to sell livestock via mobile vehicles in Jeddah

The Jeddah Municipality has announced the approval of 10 temporary municipal sites designated for the sale of livestock from mobile vehicles during this year's Hajj season (1447 AH). This strategic step is part of ongoing efforts to regulate buying and selling operations, ensure the highest food safety standards, and reduce haphazard practices that could negatively impact the urban landscape and public health. This approval was granted in direct coordination with the relevant security authorities to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the process and to provide convenient options for citizens and residents.

The historical development of the organization of livestock and sacrificial animal markets

Historically, the Hajj season and Eid al-Adha have been linked to the ritual of sacrifice, one of the most important Islamic rites observed by Muslims. In past decades, livestock sales were sometimes conducted haphazardly on the outskirts of cities or within residential neighborhoods, posing significant environmental and health challenges, in addition to causing severe traffic congestion. With the rapid development witnessed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and specifically the city of Jeddah as the main gateway to the Two Holy Mosques, the relevant authorities have taken it upon themselves to regulate this vital sector. These regulations have progressed from establishing large, state-of-the-art slaughterhouses to developing flexible and practical solutions such as designated areas for drive-through livestock sales, reflecting the leadership's commitment to meeting the needs of the population while maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the urban environment.

This initiative aims to facilitate residents' access to designated retail locations and ensure smooth traffic flow. The locations are distributed across several municipal districts within Jeddah Governorate as follows:

  • The area of the Umm Al Salam sub-municipality (4 locations): includes the vicinity of the model municipality slaughterhouse, near Al Nahdi Hall south of Al Harazat traffic light, Makkah Al Mukarramah Road (kilometer 26) opposite Al Hudhaifat station, and Al Harazat neighborhood north of Sahari station.
  • The area of the Breiman sub-municipality (one location): It is located in Al-Samar neighborhood on Al-Hussein Al-Sahwaji Street.
  • The Southern Sub-Municipality Area (two locations): It was approved in Al-Ajawid neighborhood on Al-Mundhir Bin Haritha Street, and Al-Huda neighborhood on Abi Dulaf Al-Ajli Street.
  • The Taybah sub-municipality area (two locations): They are located in Al-Bashayer neighborhood on Abdullah Bin Umayyah Street, may God be pleased with him, and Al-Wafa neighborhood behind Omari Khamis station.
  • Dhahban Municipality Area (one site): It was allocated next to Al-Rahma Mosque.

Strategic dimensions and expected impact of the initiative

This municipal regulation is of paramount importance and has a positive impact on several levels. Locally, it serves a broad segment of Jeddah's population, providing them with a safe and reliable environment for purchasing sacrificial animals under veterinary supervision, while preserving the city's aesthetic appeal and preventing environmental pollution from animal waste. Regionally and nationally, this initiative serves as a model for other municipalities and governorates across the Kingdom to emulate in managing religious seasons with high efficiency and flexibility, thus fulfilling the aspirations of Saudi Vision 2030 to improve quality of life. Internationally, the success of such regulations in a pivotal city like Jeddah reflects to the world the advanced infrastructure and services in the Kingdom, and its exceptional ability to manage religious seasons and provide the highest standards of public health for the millions of pilgrims and visitors who pass through its ports annually.

Warnings and penalties for violators

In closing, the Jeddah Municipality stressed the importance of all consumers purchasing only from authorized locations. It strongly warned against dealing with unlicensed vendors and mobile sellers outside of designated areas, in order to protect public health and safety from diseases that may be transmitted through uninspected livestock. The Municipality affirmed that anyone violating these regulations will be subject to strict penalties under the municipal violations regulations, in close cooperation with security authorities, to ensure the achievement of the objectives of this regulation and the protection of the community.
