Ramadan preparations: The Ministry of Environment intensifies monitoring of markets and slaughterhouses

As part of early preparations for the holy month of Ramadan, the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture announced the intensification of its field inspection tours across the Kingdom. These expanded campaigns aim to strengthen compliance with approved regulations and enhance the efficiency of health and environmental oversight in public markets and slaughterhouses, ensuring the availability and safety of food products during this season, which is characterized by a significant increase in consumption rates.
Field visits to ensure the availability of goods
The monitoring plan included conducting intensive field visits to verify the readiness of food and agricultural establishments and to ensure the availability of essential goods to meet increased consumer demand during the holy month. Field teams are monitoring compliance with all health and environmental regulations to guarantee the availability of safe and healthy food for Saudi consumers, with a focus on preventing any practices that could harm consumer health or disrupt market stability.
The importance of oversight during peak seasons
These campaigns are particularly important given the consumption patterns associated with Ramadan, a month that historically sees a significant and increased demand for red meat, vegetables, and fruits in Saudi markets. The Ministry's initiative is a proactive measure to regulate markets and prevent the exploitation of this peak season by selling goods of unknown origin or expired products, thereby enhancing consumer confidence and protecting public health.
Slaughterhouse readiness and veterinary control
The inspection teams focused particularly on assessing the readiness of the slaughterhouses, given the anticipated high demand. Inspections included verifying the adequacy of technical and veterinary staff, examining operational equipment, and ensuring that slaughtering procedures adhered to Islamic law and health standards. Emphasis was also placed on the cleanliness of the facilities and the proper storage and transportation practices to prevent meat spoilage and guarantee the provision of safe food products that meet the highest standards.
Enhancing food security and quality of life
These efforts align with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 regarding the Quality of Life Program and enhancing food security. Maintaining food safety and the sustainability of supply chains has implications not only for public health but also for the economy, by supporting fair competition and protecting consumers and investors who comply with regulations.
Awareness and community partnership
In addition to its oversight role, the inspections included awareness and guidance programs targeting workers in the sector to enhance their compliance with regulations. The ministry also called on consumers to be partners in oversight by reporting any violations through official channels, emphasizing that the inspection teams will continue their work throughout the period leading up to and during Ramadan to ensure the highest levels of food quality and safety for citizens and residents.
