A medical alliance to raise awareness of the risks of uveitis in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Ophthalmological Society, in collaboration with the Saudi Uveitis Group and with the active participation of the Ophthalmology Department at King Abdulaziz University Hospital and the Medical Students Club at King Saud University, is preparing to organize a series of distinguished awareness and educational events to mark World Uveitis Day ,which falls on April 10, 2026. This pioneering initiative, held under the slogan “Together for Better Care for Uveitis Patients,” is part of integrated national efforts aimed at raising community awareness of complex eye diseases and emphasizing the importance of early detection to avoid serious complications. These events are being held under the direct supervision of Dr. Abdulrahman bin Faisal Al-Balushi, President of the Saudi Ophthalmological Society, and Professor Hassan Al-Dheeb, President of the Saudi Uveitis Group, reflecting the organizers' commitment to unifying medical efforts to combat this disease.
The medical and historical context of uveitis
defined Uveitis as a swelling and irritation of the middle layer of the eye wall, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Historically, the need for a World Uveitis Day arose due to its increasing prevalence globally, as it is a leading cause of preventable vision loss if diagnosed early. International medical efforts have combined to establish awareness platforms highlighting this immune disorder, which may be linked to other systemic diseases. Consequently, global and local initiatives have been launched to correct misconceptions about the disease and to guide scientific research toward developing advanced treatment protocols that alleviate patient suffering and slow the deterioration of their vision.
Expected impact of the initiative locally and regionally
This awareness campaign is of paramount importance and has a far-reaching impact, extending from the local to the regional level. Locally in Saudi Arabia, these efforts align with the health transformation goals of Vision 2030, which focuses on enhancing quality of life and preventing chronic and disabling diseases. By educating the community and training young medical professionals, the economic and psychological burden of vision loss is reduced. Regionally and internationally, establishing such academic and medical alliances strengthens the Kingdom's position as a leading center for providing specialized ophthalmological healthcare and opens up broad avenues for research collaboration and the exchange of expertise with global health organizations, contributing to the development of more comprehensive health policies.
Serious complications and details of the awareness campaign
World Uveitis Day aims to raise awareness about this disease, which can lead to serious vision-threatening complications such as glaucoma, cataracts, and optic nerve damage if diagnosis is delayed or treatment is neglected. In addition, the campaign seeks to provide psychological and medical support to patients and improve the quality of healthcare provided to them by disseminating the latest medical knowledge. In this context, the organizers called on all members of the community and healthcare institutions to engage with this occasion by sharing awareness messages and utilizing the scientific and media materials available on the official World Uveitis Day website (worlduveitisday.org).
Open invitation for community participation
The participating organizations also extended an open invitation to the public to attend the accompanying awareness event, which will be held on Monday, April 13, 2026, at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Riyadh, specifically in the lobby of Entrance No. 3, starting at 9:00 AM. The event will include educational booths and live medical consultations, aimed at promoting health awareness and empowering the community through early prevention. This initiative is part of a series of national efforts aimed at reducing eye diseases and establishing a culture of regular checkups, thus contributing to maintaining eye health and quality of life for all members of society.
