Project Masam removes 2,108 mines in Yemen: Week 4 of January

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center's "Masam" project for clearing Yemeni lands of mines continued its rapid progress on the ground, recording new milestones that reflect the scale of efforts to protect civilians. In the fourth week of January 2026, the project's engineering teams successfully removed 2,108 mines and unexploded ordnance from various liberated Yemeni governorates.

Details of field operations and their geographical distribution

The project's operations room revealed that efforts made during this week resulted in the removal of a wide variety of explosives that posed a direct threat to the lives of citizens. The list included:

  • 31 anti-personnel mines.
  • 75 anti-tank mines.
  • 2,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance.
  • Two explosive devices.

These operations were spread across several Yemeni governorates. Aden Governorate witnessed intensive activity involving the removal of unexploded ordnance in the Khormaksar district and Aden city. On the western coast, specifically in Al Hudaydah Governorate, teams cleared the districts of Hays and Al Khawkhah of hundreds of munitions and anti-tank mines. Efforts also extended to Al Mukalla district in Hadramawt Governorate, Midi district in Hajjah Governorate, and districts in Lahj, Ma'rib, and Taiz, reflecting the project's wide geographical reach to cover all contaminated areas.

The importance of the project and its humanitarian impact

This effort comes within the framework of the leading role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in alleviating the suffering of the brotherly Yemeni people. The MASAM operations are of paramount importance because indiscriminately planted mines not only threaten lives but also disrupt development, prevent farmers from accessing their lands, and hinder the return of displaced persons to their homes, in addition to the dangers they pose to children, women, and the elderly in their daily movements.

Record results and ongoing efforts

With this week's additions, the total number of mines removed in January alone has risen to 2,862. More importantly, the total number of mines cleared by Project Masam since its inception has reached 534,813. This staggering figure represents more than half a million lives saved and underscores the Kingdom's commitment, through its humanitarian arm, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, to continue its work until all Yemeni lands are cleared of mines, ensuring a safe environment that allows Yemenis to live in dignity and security, free from the fear of sudden explosions.
