Transportation plan in Mecca during Ramadan to serve the pilgrims

Comprehensive preparations for the Umrah season during Ramadan
The General Transport Center has completed its comprehensive operational preparations for transportation services in Makkah during the holy month of Ramadan. This is part of an integrated system aimed at improving traffic flow and providing flexible and safe transportation options for pilgrims and worshippers. The plan focuses on supporting smooth traffic flow during daily peak hours, particularly in the central area and high-density locations surrounding the Grand Mosque.
Historical context and the importance of crowd management
During Ramadan each year, Mecca welcomes millions of visitors from around the world to perform Umrah and pray at the Grand Mosque. This massive influx presents a significant logistical challenge, and managing transportation is a cornerstone of the season's success. Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has developed advanced infrastructure and meticulous operational plans to handle these crowds, leveraging cutting-edge technologies and expertise to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims. This year's plan builds upon these ongoing efforts, focusing on integrating various modes of transportation to maximize efficiency.
Details of the 2024 operational plan
Preparations included developing integrated operational plans for Makkah Taxi and Makkah Bus services, encompassing the organization of parking, loading, and unloading areas, and the allocation of operational capacity according to demand. Efforts were also made to coordinate these services with other modes of transportation, contributing to the integration of different transport options within the city and reducing travel times during peak hours. To enhance technical and operational readiness, the center ensured the operational fleets were prepared, implemented regular maintenance programs, and provided necessary field support, including mobile maintenance workshops and emergency response mechanisms, to guarantee reliable and continuous operation around the clock.
Expected impact and its role in achieving Vision 2030
The importance of this plan extends beyond the local level to encompass regional and international impact. Successfully managing the transportation system during peak seasons enhances the Kingdom's reputation as a nation capable of efficiently and effectively hosting and managing the world's largest gatherings of people. These efforts align directly with the objectives of the "Guests of God Service Program," a key component of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enrich and deepen the Hajj and Umrah experience. By providing a seamless and comfortable transportation experience, these plans enable pilgrims to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind, leaving them with a positive and lasting impression.
Integration of routes and support for public transport
As part of efforts to support public transportation, the operational plan included increasing the capacity of the Makkah Bus service and organizing its routes within the central area. Two new shuttle bus routes to and from the Grand Mosque were introduced; one via the Aisha Mosque station to the central Jabal al-Kaaba station, and the other via the Haramain High-Speed Railway station to the eastern Jabal al-Kaaba station. This will facilitate access for worshippers and pilgrims and reduce traffic congestion on the roads surrounding the Grand Mosque.
