Maintenance work on Makkah's roads and bridges completed as part of preparations for the Hajj season

In its ongoing efforts to provide the best possible services to pilgrims, the Holy Capital Municipality has continued its comprehensive maintenance and rehabilitation work on pedestrian and traffic bridges and road networks in Makkah and the Holy Sites. These intensive efforts are part of the Municipality's operational plans and key preparations for the Hajj season, aimed at enhancing public safety, improving infrastructure efficiency, and streamlining traffic flow on the vital roads and routes used by millions of pilgrims.
A historical legacy in service to those visiting Mecca
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has devoted considerable attention and care to developing the infrastructure in Mecca and the Holy Sites. For decades, the wise leadership has undertaken the responsibility of facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage and removing all obstacles for pilgrims. Road and bridge projects are a natural extension of this rich historical legacy, with technologies evolving and projects expanding year after year to accommodate the increasing numbers of Muslims arriving from all corners of the earth. These facilities are not merely engineering works, but rather an embodiment of the Kingdom's noble mission to care for the Islamic holy sites and serve their visitors with the highest possible standards of quality.
A complete package of technical maintenance work
The Holy Capital Municipality oversees the maintenance and operation of a vast road network spanning over 11.3 million linear meters in Makkah, in addition to 274,000 linear meters in the Holy Sites. Furthermore, the readiness of 143 bridges is monitored to enhance traffic flow and improve safety. The work included a comprehensive package of technical improvements, encompassing the milling and resurfacing of over 47,986 square meters and the application of 2,400 square meters of road markings.
The efforts also included treating and painting concrete elements covering an area exceeding 57,291 square meters, contributing to improving the urban landscape. The municipality also installed and maintained 1,040 linear meters of safety barriers, maintained 257 linear meters of bridge expansion joints, and installed 125 square meters of protective netting for bridge supports. Regarding traffic safety, 71 damaged traffic signs were replaced, 22 height-delay markers were installed, and 52 traffic reflectors were maintained.
Strategic dimensions within Hajj season preparations
These projects are of paramount importance and have a far-reaching impact that extends beyond local boundaries. Locally, these improvements contribute to raising the quality of life for the residents of Mecca and facilitating their daily commutes. Regionally and internationally, the successful preparations for the Hajj season reflect the Kingdom's exceptional capabilities in crowd management and providing world-class infrastructure. This success reinforces Saudi Arabia's position as a leading nation capable of hosting millions of visitors simultaneously within a limited geographical area, aligning with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to enrich the religious and cultural experience of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah.
The Secretariat affirmed that these ongoing works are aimed at raising the readiness of the road and bridge network and improving the quality of services provided to pilgrims, in line with the density of traffic and contributing to creating a safer and smoother journey in Makkah and the holy sites.
