Rain forecast for the Makkah region and Civil Defense warnings

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important weather alert, indicating rainfall in the Makkah region . According to the report, this rainy period will begin on Friday and continue until Sunday (March 6-8), affecting a wide range of the region's governorates.
The center explained that the weather system will directly affect several governorates, including Taif, Maysan, Turabah, Ranyah, Al-Khurmah, Al-Muwayh, Adham, Al-Ardiyat, Al-Lith, and Al-Qunfudhah. This situation requires continuous monitoring of weather updates due to the possibility of flash floods in some valleys and ravines as a result of the expected heavy rainfall during this period.
The nature of the terrain and the impact of rainfall in the Makkah region
Weather warnings in this region are of particular importance due to the diverse and complex geography of the Makkah region. The area combines towering mountain ranges, such as the Sarawat Mountains in Taif and Maysan, with low-lying coastal plains in Al-Lith and Al-Qunfudhah. This topographical contrast makes the region prone to flash floods, where water flows rapidly from the mountains towards the valleys and plains, necessitating heightened caution from residents and visitors alike.
Historically, the region experiences periods of atmospheric instability during seasonal transitions, leading to heavy rainfall. While this rainfall is vital for groundwater and agriculture, it requires robust infrastructure and a rapid response from relevant authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property. The Kingdom is working on this through its plans to develop stormwater drainage networks and mitigate the risks of flash floods.
Safety guidelines and government efforts
In a related development, the General Directorate of Civil Defense responded to the issued warnings, urging everyone to exercise caution. Civil Defense emphasized the importance of staying away from valleys and flood channels, and not attempting to cross valleys while they are flowing, regardless of the water level. They also stressed the need to adhere to instructions announced through various media outlets and official social media platforms.
These warnings reflect the integration between the National Center for Meteorology and security and service agencies to enhance preparedness. Early monitoring of weather conditions enables relevant authorities to take proactive measures, such as deploying safety patrols to critical locations and alerting travelers on highways that may be affected by poor visibility or water accumulation, thus strengthening the Kingdom's public safety system.
