Environmental sanitation in Mecca: The capital's municipality carries out 90,000 operations

The Holy Capital Municipality announced the success of its intensive operational plan to enhance environmental sanitation in Makkah during March. These efforts are part of the ongoing commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment befitting the status of the Holy Capital and its visitors from around the world. The municipality's field teams carried out approximately 90,092 inspection missions and comprehensive control operations, targeting various residential neighborhoods and vital sites to ensure the highest levels of health protection and reduce the causes and vectors of diseases.

The historical importance and Saudi leadership in serving the pilgrims

Historically, Mecca holds an exceptional status that necessitates meticulous environmental and health management throughout the year, especially during the Hajj and Umrah seasons, which witness the influx of millions of Muslims from around the world. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing and the Holy Capital Municipality, is working to develop an integrated system of municipal services aligned with the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Maintaining the integrity of the urban environment and combating epidemics in this sacred place is not merely a service obligation, but a religious and national commitment that has been the culmination of decades of continuous development of infrastructure and preventative systems to ensure the safety of pilgrims and Umrah performers.

Details of field operations to promote environmental sanitation in Mecca

The extensive field campaign conducted by the municipality included a wide variety of preventative measures to combat pests and disease vectors. Direct control operations targeted 43,563 sites, including 18,831 targeted operations to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, 1,543 stagnant water sites, which provide a breeding ground for insects, were addressed, and 887 manholes and stormwater drainage channels were treated to ensure the smooth flow of water and prevent any accumulations that could harm public health.

Pest control and rapid response to citizens' reports

Efforts were not limited to mosquito control; they also included treating 22,615 fly breeding sites in neighborhoods and public facilities, in addition to carrying out 2,117 specialized rodent control operations in their breeding grounds. Furthermore, periodic reports demonstrated a rapid and effective response to residents' concerns; field teams successfully addressed 536 reports received during the same period, directly contributing to improving the quality of life, enhancing the urban environment of the Holy City, and providing comfort for citizens, residents, and visitors.

Local and international impact of environmental sanitation efforts

The importance of these field operations extends beyond the local level, impacting regional and international health security. Ensuring a healthy environment free from epidemics and disease vectors in Mecca directly contributes to preventing the transboundary transmission of infectious diseases that visitors and pilgrims might carry back to their home countries after performing the rituals. Locally, these measures enhance public trust in municipal services and provide a safe and healthy living environment, supporting the quality of life objectives as a key pillar of sustainable development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
