The Makkah Health Cluster announced the launch of a comprehensive and advanced virtual healthcare system, which includes a suite of smart digital services for pilgrims during this year's Hajj season. This strategic step aims to enhance the quality of medical care provided to pilgrims, facilitate immediate access to health services, and improve the efficiency of rapid response to emergency medical cases within Makkah and the Holy Sites.
The evolution of healthcare for pilgrims throughout history
For decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health and safety of pilgrims visiting the Holy Mosque in Mecca. Historically, healthcare services for pilgrims began with simple field clinics and mobile first-aid teams. As the number of pilgrims increased year after year, these services evolved to include the construction of large hospitals and specialized health centers in the holy sites. Today, we are witnessing a qualitative leap that crowns this historical legacy through the shift towards digital medicine. This new system is an extension of the healthcare transformation efforts and the development of smart care models, employing modern technologies and artificial intelligence to support pilgrims to the Holy Mosque, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Guests of God Service Program.
Key smart digital services for pilgrims in Mecca
The digital package launched by the cluster includes a virtual emergency medicine service supported by the SEHA Virtual Hospital. This service allows patients and field medical teams to communicate directly with consultants and specialists remotely via advanced platforms within healthcare facilities, contributing to immediate case assessment, expediting medical procedures, and reducing waiting times. The system also includes remote diagnostic radiology services, linking radiology images from healthcare facilities to specialists at the SEHA Virtual Hospital for review of medical reports in record time, thus accelerating medical decision-making and the commencement of appropriate treatment.
Rapid field interventions to save lives
In critical cases, the cluster activated remote stroke support services by connecting suspected cases with specialists through advanced video analysis and communication devices. This allows for assessment, guidance of field teams, and decisions regarding rapid intervention or transfer, thereby increasing survival rates and reducing complications. As part of its chronic care program, the cluster, in collaboration with the Virtual Health Hospital, launched the "Your Journey Companion" service. This digital health service monitors pilgrims with heart failure using advanced sensors provided to them during their travel between Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah, in coordination with the health clusters.
Preventive initiatives and continuous monitoring
The group also launched a "Safe Hajj" initiative to monitor diabetic patients. This initiative utilizes smart sensors provided to domestic pilgrims at designated points to monitor vital signs and blood sugar levels around the clock. These sensors are linked to healthcare systems for early intervention and to prevent complications. Additionally, high-risk cases are monitored 24/7 under the "Hajj in Good Health" initiative by case coordinators and health trainers. The system also includes remote medical consultations with doctors available 24/7 via the 937 hotline and the "Sehhaty" app. Furthermore, virtual clinic services are being expanded at healthcare facilities within the Holy City of Mecca to facilitate access to medical services for citizens, residents, and pilgrims, and to reduce pressure on hospitals during peak times.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence technologies are employed to support rapid diagnosis, analyze health data, and assist in medical decision-making, ensuring the provision of comprehensive and safe health services to pilgrims, reflecting the Kingdom's leadership in managing healthcare for large crowds.
