Makkah Environment and King Abdulaziz University: A joint plan for Environment Week 2026

In a move aimed at unifying national efforts to serve the environmental sector, the Makkah branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture held an important coordination meeting with King Abdulaziz University, represented by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. This meeting was held to lay the groundwork and outline a comprehensive action plan in preparation for the launch of "Environment Week 2026," ensuring maximum impact and effectiveness.
Early preparations for an important national event
During the meeting, the two parties discussed mechanisms for translating the extensive academic expertise of King Abdulaziz University into tangible, practical initiatives. This move aims to move beyond traditional awareness campaigns and develop a range of high-quality events that address the needs of residents and visitors to the Western Region, contributing to raising community awareness and establishing environmental culture as a sustainable daily lifestyle, rather than a fleeting, seasonal practice.
Academic and executive integration to achieve Vision 2030
This collaboration comes within a broader national context that aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Green Saudi Arabia initiative, which prioritize environmental protection, vegetation development, and the sustainability of natural resources. The partnership between executive bodies, represented by the Ministry, and research institutions, represented by the University, is a cornerstone for bridging the gap between theory and practice. Both parties aim to integrate academic research capabilities with governmental executive capacities to develop sustainable solutions to the environmental challenges facing the region.
The role of scientific research in resource sustainability
The meeting focused specifically on activating the role of the College of Environmental Sciences to ensure that "Environment Week 2026" reflects the Kingdom's stature and the scale of its environmental achievements. This partnership is expected to yield field studies and awareness programs based on accurate scientific data, thus maximizing the long-term positive impact of initiatives related to waste management, water conservation, and the protection of biodiversity in the Makkah region, which is characterized by its unique environmental and geographical features.
Strengthening community partnerships
In this regard, Engineer Waleed Al-Daghis, Director General of the Ministry's branch in the Makkah region, emphasized that this initiative reflects a firm conviction that environmental work cannot succeed without effective partnerships with national experts. Al-Daghis explained that expanding partnerships with the public, private, and non-profit sectors is a fundamental pillar for achieving significant progress in environmental protection and ensuring the sustainability of environmental resources for future generations. He noted that the early preparations for 2026 demonstrate the Ministry's commitment to providing a model of integrated work.
