Makkah Education crowns sumo champions in robotics programming competition

The fifth edition of the "Sumo and Fast Track 2026" competition kicked off in the holy city of Mecca, organized by the General Directorate of Education in the Mecca region. This pioneering event aims to develop innovation androbotics programming among female students. Thirty-nine students representing eight different schools participated in the challenging technical competition. The event witnessed significant community engagement, with 80 parents in attendance, reflecting the education strategy of fostering a vital partnership between schools and the community to support emerging national talents in the technological fields.
The journey of digital transformation and the development of technology education in the Kingdom
Interest in technology is not a recent phenomenon, but rather the culmination of a long journey of digital transformation in Saudi Arabia. Historically, the Ministry of Education began integrating computer concepts into school curricula decades ago, and these efforts have gradually evolved to include the adoption of advanced educational pathways focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). With the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, integrating modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation into the educational environment has become a pressing necessity. These competitions are part of broader national initiatives aimed at preparing a generation capable of engaging with the language of the modern age and transforming schools into incubators of technological innovation.
Enhancing creative thinking through robotics programming challenges
The competition focuses primarily on developing students' creative and logical thinking skills through the design andprogramming of "mBot" educational robots . This process requires students to prepare themselves to tackle precise and complex challenges within sumo arenas and high-speed tracking tracks. These advanced competitions contribute to solidifying mechanical and software engineering concepts and fostering teamwork within a stimulating learning environment. The event also included unique creative segments, such as a presentation in Chinese by the school principal, Afnan Noah, highlighting the competition's aim to cultivate a generation that is both technically and culturally proficient and capable of meeting future challenges, thanks to the efforts of the partners and international trainer, Nariman Kashgari.
Strategic dimensions and the impact of technological innovation locally and internationally
The significance of these events extends far beyond mere school competitions, impacting multiple levels. Locally, these initiatives contribute to building a knowledge-based society in Mecca and producing young talent capable of meeting the needs of the evolving Saudi labor market. Regionally, enhancing students' capabilities in these fields solidifies the Kingdom's position as a leading regional hub for innovation and technology in the Middle East. Internationally, these local competitions serve as a cornerstone for preparing Saudi teams to participate in the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) and other international competitions, thus strengthening Saudi Arabia's presence on the global scientific stage and showcasing the competitive and innovative capabilities of the Saudi mind.
Crowning the future champions at the conclusion of the competitions
At the conclusion of the challenges, which demanded high precision in programming and strategic thinking, the organizing committee crowned the champions of the various educational tracks amidst a spirited and competitive atmosphere. Students Aline Aqili, Talia Rakan, and Ghazal Yamani deservedly won first place in the "Fast Track" competitions for their respective grade levels. In the "Sumo" challenge, Amira Al-Ansari secured first place in the secondary school category, while Ghadi Sindi excelled in the intermediate level, and Ehab Bader topped the primary school category. The events concluded with a large community and educational celebration of the participants' technical excellence, highlighting the promising future that relies on employing advanced technology to serve comprehensive national development.
