Majmaah University observes the Ramadan crescent in Sudair with the participation of 13 countries

Majmaah University has completed all its technical, administrative, and logistical preparations at the Hawtat Sudair Observatory in anticipation of the annual event eagerly awaited by the Muslim world: the sighting of the crescent moon of Ramadan. The university has utilized the latest astronomical technologies to ensure accurate observation, with the participation of student and academic delegations representing 13 Arab and Islamic countries, thus adding an international and scientific dimension to this important religious event.
Advanced technical equipment to ensure accurate vision
In preparation for the event, Dr. Mohammed Al-Shehri, Vice Rector for Scientific Research at Majmaah University, confirmed that the observatory underwent comprehensive upgrades this year. These upgrades included the allocation of a dedicated, enclosed room for the official moon-sighting committee, providing a quiet environment that ensures maximum focus and accuracy, free from any external influences that might hinder the observation process. The observatory was also equipped with the latest digital telescopes and astronomical instruments to aid in tracking the crescent moon and pinpointing its location with extreme precision. Furthermore, special platforms were set up for media personnel and guests to broadcast the event live.
International and with broad student participation
What distinguishes this year's observatory is the remarkable international presence, as it welcomed student delegations from the Islamic University representing more than 13 different nationalities. This participation aims to integrate theory with practice, giving students the opportunity to experience the unique astronomical and religious practice of crescent observation, which is an integral part of Islamic heritage. The observatory also hosted high-level delegations from the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Kuwait to exchange astronomical expertise and strengthen cooperation in the field of crescent observation and timekeeping.
Why the Hawtat Sudair Observatory?
The Hawtat Sudair Observatory holds strategic and historical importance in Saudi Arabia, as it is one of the most officially designated sites for crescent moon sightings. This is due to its unique geographical location and topography; situated in a high-altitude area characterized by clear skies and distance from the light and industrial pollution that plagues major cities, it provides an ideal environment for astronomical observations with the naked eye or telescopic instruments. The Supreme Court of the Kingdom relies heavily on the testimonies received from this observatory, given the expertise of its observers and the precision of its equipment.
Integration of governmental and security efforts
To ensure the smooth and easy conduct of the process, various government and security sectors in the region collaborated. Traffic and police teams were present to manage traffic flow and secure the site, alongside Red Crescent and medical teams to provide necessary logistical and health support to participating delegations and visitors. This reflects the Kingdom's keen interest in reviving the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in sighting the crescent moon of the holy month.
