Developing Medina's roads: Massive preparations for the Hajj season
The Municipality of Madinah continues its tireless efforts to ensure a safe and comfortable Hajj journey for pilgrims through the Madinah Roads and Surrounding Areas Development Project. This project is part of a comprehensive plan to enhance the urban landscape in the central area during the 1447 AH Hajj season, reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to providing the best possible services to pilgrims and visitors from their arrival until their departure.

Historically, Medina has always been the second most important stop on the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage after Mecca, with millions of Muslims from around the world eager to visit and pray at the Prophet's Mosque. Over the decades, expansion and development projects have been undertaken in the central area to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. The focus on infrastructure and facilitating access to religious and historical sites is not a recent development, but rather an extension of a long-standing approach adopted by the Saudi leadership to ensure the comfort of pilgrims. Over time, Medina has transformed from a city with traditional routes into a sophisticated urban model that meets the latest global standards in urban planning and crowd management.
Details of the Madinah Roads and Squares Development Project
The current development works encompassed several vital routes, most notably Al-Hussein Bin Ali Road, Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Saleh Road, and Umm Al-Mu'minin Zainab Bint Jahsh Road. Additionally, the focus was on Al-Salam Square and Uhud Avenue, integrating them into a comprehensive service system aimed at enhancing the quality of services provided to pilgrims and visitors in the vicinity of the Prophet's Mosque. The Municipality completed the development of roads with a length exceeding 68,000 meters, along with the implementation of landscaping and urban rehabilitation works covering a total area of over 67,000 square meters. The projects also included the construction of sidewalks with an area exceeding 41,000 square meters and dedicated vehicle lanes of a similar size, ensuring smooth traffic flow and reducing congestion during peak hours.
Improving the urban environment and afforestation
The work wasn't limited to paving and widening roads; it extended to improving the urban environment and beautifying the central area. This included installing 192 decorative lighting poles, planting 5,944 trees and 266 shrubs, and creating over 5,500 square meters of landscaped areas. These environmental initiatives effectively contribute to moderating the climate and providing green spaces that offer visitors a sense of comfort and tranquility while strolling through the area.
