Macron vows a unified European response to Trump's Greenland tariffs

In a new escalation of transatlantic tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday condemned US President Donald Trump's announcement of his intention to impose new punitive tariffs on European countries that have opposed his efforts to acquire Greenland . Macron asserted that the language of economic threats would not deter Europe from protecting its sovereignty.
“Threats of tariffs are unacceptable and have no place in this context,” the French president said in a firm post on the “X” platform, adding in a warning tone: “Europeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner if this is confirmed. We will ensure respect for European sovereignty.”.
Dimensions of the conflict over Greenland
Trump's surprise announcement of the tariffs came as a direct response to European military movements in the Arctic, where France, Sweden, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom have all deployed troops to Greenland. These forces are on a reconnaissance mission as part of a large-scale military exercise organized by Denmark in cooperation with other NATO members.
Greenland is gaining increasing geopolitical importance, not only because of its strategic location between North America and Europe, but also because of its vast natural resources and rare minerals, which have become a target for major powers as the Arctic ice melts. American interest in the island is longstanding, but it has intensified with direct attempts at acquisition, which have been met with staunch European and Danish resistance, as the island is considered an integral part of European national security.
European unity
In his response, Macron linked the defense of Greenland to other international issues, stating, “No intimidation or threat can affect us, not in Ukraine, not in Greenland, not anywhere else in the world.” This statement points to a broader European strategy aimed at strengthening the continent’s “strategic independence” and reducing reliance on the volatile decisions of the United States.
The French president affirmed that his country is “committed to the sovereignty and independence of states, in Europe and elsewhere. This guides our choices. This underpins our commitment to our Charter and within the framework of the United Nations.” He added, explaining the interconnectedness of the various fronts: “On this basis, we support Ukraine, and we have built a coalition of those who desire a lasting and stable peace, to defend these principles and our security. It is also on this basis that we decided to join the exercise that Denmark decided to organize in Greenland. We assume our responsibility for it, especially since it concerns security in the Arctic and on Europe’s borders.”.
The potential repercussions of a trade war
Economically, the threat of new tariffs raises fears of a return to the trade wars that characterized previous periods of transatlantic relations. Global markets understand that any US tariffs will be met with similar European measures, potentially disrupting global supply chains and increasing costs for consumers on both sides.
Sources close to the Élysée Palace indicated that Macron will speak “in the next few hours” with his European counterparts, particularly the leaders of the countries directly targeted by these new US tariffs, to coordinate positions. It was emphasized that the European Union possesses “powerful tools to respond to these practices and defend its companies,” referring to the legal mechanisms of the World Trade Organization and the collective capacity of the European single market to impose effective countermeasures.
