The livestock markets in the Northern Borders region are witnessing remarkable economic activity and increasing commercial activity as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, with citizens and residents flocking intensively during the last days of Sha’ban to secure their needs for red meat, which is a basic pillar of Ramadan tables in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Social heritage and early preparations
This increased demand stems from a deeply rooted social and cultural tradition in Saudi society. Families in the Northern Borders region, known for its pastoral lifestyle and long history of livestock breeding, are keen to purchase sacrificial animals in preparation for Ramadan feasts and iftar meals. Meat dishes such as kabsa, thareed, and soup are among the most popular traditional foods, leading to a peak in demand for both local and imported sheep during this time of year.
Balance of supply and demand and market stability
The abundant supply of various types of livestock has contributed to price stability in the markets, enabling shoppers to obtain their needs at competitive prices. This stability reflects the success of supply chains and the diversification of sources, including both local production and imports, thus enhancing food security in the region and preventing monopolies or unjustified price hikes during peak seasons.
Intensive monitoring efforts to ensure public safety
In response to this increased commercial activity, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture branch in the Northern Borders region intensified its monitoring and awareness campaigns. These intensive campaigns covered 15 public markets and 12 model slaughterhouses distributed throughout the region. The aim of these efforts is to ensure that livestock are free from epidemic and infectious diseases and to guarantee compliance with all health requirements in slaughterhouses and points of sale.

Field inspection teams are working around the clock to monitor any violations that may affect consumer health and to apply the prescribed penalties to violators in accordance with the approved regulations. These measures are of paramount importance to ensure the availability of safe and healthy food for Ramadan meals, as well as to maintain the overall environment of the markets and prevent unregulated slaughter outside of licensed abattoirs, reflecting the commitment of the relevant authorities to providing a safe and sustainable shopping environment for the region's residents.
