The Ministry of Education adopts the standard age for admission according to the Gregorian calendar

The Saudi Ministry of Education has announced important updates regarding the registration of new students. The official age for admission, according to the Gregorian calendar, has been adopted as the primary criterion for enrollment in first grade and kindergarten for the academic year 1448 AH (2026 CE). This decision reflects the Ministry's commitment to streamlining the online registration process and ensuring that students are placed in the appropriate educational stages for their age, thus positively impacting their academic progress from the very beginning.
Evolution of registration standards in the Saudi education system
Historically, Saudi Arabia has undergone radical transformations in its education system structure. In past decades, it relied exclusively on the Islamic calendar (Hijri calendar) to determine students' ages. With rapid development and the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to align local systems with global standards, the need for standardized time zones has become apparent. The shift towards using the Gregorian calendar for determining age groups is a strategic step designed to streamline administrative procedures, reduce age variations within classrooms, ensure the Saudi education system's compatibility with international standards, and facilitate the transfer of students studying abroad or returning from overseas.
Approved age groups for the first grade of primary school
Regarding registration details for first grade, the Ministry clarified that there are two main categories. The first category includes children who turned six years old or older before August 24, 2020, and these children are eligible for direct registration. The second category includes children who are less than six years old by no more than 90 days (i.e., those born between August 25, 2020, and November 22, 2020). A condition for acceptance in this category is that the child has completed a full year of kindergarten accredited by the Ministry, to ensure the child's academic, social, and psychological readiness before entering primary education.
Standard age requirements for admission to kindergartens
The Ministry of Education has given considerable attention to early childhood development, precisely defining the age range for admission to the three kindergarten levels. Level 1 (KG1) is open to children born between August 24, 2022, and August 24, 2023. Level 2 (KG2) includes children born between August 25, 2021, and August 25, 2022. Level 3 (KG3) includes children born between August 25, 2020, and August 24, 2021. This precise division ensures that age requirements are met and guarantees every child their right to receive the care and education appropriate for their developmental stage.
The strategic impact of standardizing admission criteria
This new regulation has far-reaching implications. Locally, strict adherence to age-appropriate standards contributes to a more cohesive learning environment, enabling teachers to implement modern teaching strategies more effectively and reducing bullying and knowledge gaps among peers. Regionally and internationally, this measure enhances the Kingdom's standing as a nation adopting global best practices in education. Aligning students' ages with international standards facilitates the Kingdom's more accurate participation in international education assessments and provides reliable indicators of the quality of educational outcomes compared to developed countries. This approach also underscores the Ministry's ongoing commitment to regulating early childhood education standards and improving the quality of the foundational stages, ensuring the development of a globally competitive generation.
