Laparoscopic liver tumor removal in Al-Ahsa: A new medical achievement

The health sector in Al-Ahsa Governorate recorded a new qualitative leap, represented by the success of a specialized medical team at Prince Saud bin Jalawi Hospital in performing a delicate and complex surgical operation, the first of its kind in the governorate, as the team was able to remove a liver tumor endoscopically from a patient in her forties, thus ending her health suffering without the need for traditional surgical incision.
Details of the medical achievement
In detail, the hospital received a woman in her forties suffering from a 6-centimeter liver tumor. After conducting the necessary clinical and radiological examinations, the liver and pancreas tumor surgery team decided to perform surgery using advanced laparoscopic techniques. The operation was a complete success, with the entire left lobe of the liver being removed through very small incisions in the abdominal wall, thus sparing the patient the risks and complications of traditional surgery, which usually requires a large incision.
The importance of endoscopic technology in liver surgeries
This procedure is significant because it represents a shift in the treatment approach in the province. Traditional liver surgeries are often associated with long recovery periods, severe postoperative pain, and a higher risk of wound infections. In contrast, laparoscopic surgery offers numerous advantages, most notably reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, faster return to normal life, and better cosmetic results due to the absence of large surgical scars.
Staff efficiency and teamwork of the medical team
This achievement was not a coincidence, but rather the result of harmonious teamwork by a medical team comprising leading surgical consultants, anesthesiologists, and qualified nursing staff, in addition to the intensive care team that oversaw the patient's post-operative care. The patient was discharged from the hospital in good health and stable condition, confirming the effectiveness of the medical procedure and the precision of the follow-up care.
Localization of health services and transformation targets
This success comes within the framework of the ongoing efforts of the “Al-Ahsa Health Cluster” to raise the efficiency of medical facilities and localize specialized and delicate surgeries, in line with the objectives of the Health Transformation Program and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. This strategic direction aims to provide integrated health care for citizens and residents within the governorate, saving them the trouble of traveling and seeking treatment in specialized medical centers in other regions, and enhancing the quality of life and health services provided in the region.
