The Aesthetics of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri Art in Contemporary Art: A Kuwaiti Study

A recent Kuwaiti academic study has highlighted the unique aesthetic and formative dimensions of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri art, emphasizing that it represents a comprehensive visual and cultural discourse embodying the identity of the community in southern Saudi Arabia. This study, presented by Kuwaiti researcher Suad Abbas Haidar under the title “The Aesthetic and Ideological Dimensions of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri Art Mural Decorations as an Approach to Creating Artistic Works in Light of the Constructivist Approach,” opens new horizons for reinterpreting this rich folk heritage as an artistic practice that combines traditional authenticity with the potential for contemporary application.
Historical roots and feminist identity in the art of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri
This traditional art form, originating in the Asir region of southern Saudi Arabia, is considered one of the oldest forms of mural art closely associated with women. Historically, women decorated the interior walls of their homes with geometric patterns and vibrant colors derived from the local environment, making it a uniquely feminine practice that combines beauty, symbolism, and social function. This historical and social dimension contributed to the inclusion of this ancient art on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, enhancing global interest in its exceptional cultural and human value.
The structural and aesthetic dimensions of southern decorations
The academic study revealed that the motifs of this art form are characterized by a highly cohesive compositional structure based on symmetry, rhythmic repetition, geometric variation, and abstraction. These characteristics endow the murals with a unique aesthetic value, making them fertile ground for artistic and applied research. The researcher explained that the colors used in the inscriptions form a semantic and structural framework that reflects the geographical, environmental, and social nature of the region. Through both theoretical and applied analysis, it became clear that the structural approach provides an ideal framework for analyzing the compositional relationships between artistic elements, thus facilitating a close understanding of the relationship between form and content in the artwork.
The impact of the event and employment prospects in contemporary digital arts
The significance of this study lies in its contribution to building bridges of cultural and artistic communication at the regional level, reflecting Kuwaiti academic interest in the rich Saudi heritage. On both local and international levels, this research opens wide the door for contemporary designers and artists to utilize the characteristics of this art in modern design fields, such as applied arts, interior design, fashion, and even digital arts and multimedia. Reconstructing traditional decorative elements within modern compositions ensures the preservation of the authentic spirit of heritage while keeping pace with the demands of the digital age, thus guaranteeing the sustainability of this ancient art as a symbol of identity and human creativity.
