Saudi aid to Sudan: 500 food baskets for affected families in Khartoum

As part of its ongoing humanitarian efforts, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center distributed 500 food baskets in Khartoum locality, Khartoum State, Sudan. This aid targeted displaced families and those returning to their homes, benefiting 3,494 individuals, as part of the “Madad” initiative to support food security in Sudan for 2024.
The general context of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan
This aid comes at a critical time for Sudan, which has been experiencing a complex and widespread humanitarian crisis since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. The conflict has displaced millions of people internally and forced hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in neighboring countries, creating one of the world's largest displacement crises. This situation has led to the near-total collapse of basic services such as health and education, and has severely exacerbated food insecurity, with a large portion of the population facing the threat of famine. Khartoum State, the epicenter of the conflict, is among the worst affected areas, with its residents suffering from acute shortages of food, clean water, and safe shelter.
The importance of aid and the role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
This initiative is of paramount importance both locally and internationally. Locally, the food baskets directly contribute to alleviating the suffering of affected families and providing them with essential food supplies, thus helping to stabilize their lives and prevent the worsening of malnutrition, particularly among children, women, and the elderly. This aid also represents a message of solidarity and hope to the local population, and underscores the Kingdom's support for the brotherly Sudanese people in their time of need.
At the regional and international levels, these efforts reflect the leading role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its humanitarian arm, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, in responding to humanitarian crises around the world. These ongoing initiatives underscore the Kingdom's commitment to the principles of humanitarian action and providing assistance to affected countries without discrimination. They also highlight the scale of the disaster in Sudan and encourage the international community and other humanitarian organizations to intensify their efforts to provide further support to millions in need.
