King Salman Center combats cholera in Yemen: Services provided to 1,783 beneficiaries

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its humanitarian arm, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, continued its tireless efforts to support the health sector in Yemen. The Emergency Cholera Response Project provided medical and treatment services to 1,783 beneficiaries between November 19 and 25, 2025. This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to alleviating the suffering of the brotherly Yemeni people and protecting them from deadly epidemics.

Details of medical and preventive services

Services provided this week included thorough and comprehensive screening for suspected cholera cases at several key locations, including Aden and Al-Rayyan airports, as well as the Al-Hafiya and Razih land border crossings. These efforts covered a wide geographical area encompassing coastal Hadramawt, Hadramawt Valley, Aden, Hajjah, and Sa'dah. Field reports confirmed the success of the preventive measures, with no suspected or confirmed cases of cholera recorded among travelers during this period, reflecting the effectiveness of the monitoring and surveillance systems.

In addition to providing treatment and diagnostic services, the project placed great emphasis on raising awareness, delivering 292 educational sessions that benefited 6,223 individuals. These sessions focused on methods of infection prevention, the importance of personal hygiene, and how to handle water and food to ensure their safety, which is crucial in breaking the chain of community transmission of the epidemic.

Context of the health crisis in Yemen

These efforts are of paramount importance given the complex health context Yemen has been experiencing for years. The ongoing conflict has damaged water and sanitation infrastructure, creating a breeding ground for waterborne diseases such as cholera. Cholera is one of the major health challenges Yemen has faced in the last decade, with previous outbreaks requiring urgent international intervention. The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center’s intervention is part of a preventative strategy aimed at preventing a recurrence of such outbreaks and protecting the fragile health system from collapse under the weight of epidemics.

Project strategy and objectives

The emergency response project targets the areas most affected and vulnerable to the epidemic, focusing on reducing infection rates and limiting the geographical spread of the disease. To achieve this, specialized medical teams have been established to work around the clock to screen and monitor travelers at air and land ports of entry, ensuring that the infection does not spread across borders or between provinces.

The project also includes direct logistical and medical support to Yemeni health facilities, including supplying them with essential cholera treatment supplies such as intravenous and oral rehydration solutions to replace lost fluids, appropriate antibiotics, and protective equipment and sterilization materials. Furthermore, the project is working to expand the bed capacity of isolation and treatment centers to ensure they are fully prepared to handle any potential increase in cases, thus directly contributing to reducing cholera-related mortality rates.

The Kingdom's leading role in humanitarian work

These initiatives embody the leading humanitarian and relief role that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plays globally and regionally. Support for the Yemeni health sector is not limited to providing medicines, but also includes capacity building, facility restoration, and support for medical personnel. These ongoing efforts underscore the Kingdom's commitment to Yemen's health security and well-being, recognizing that health security is an integral part of overall stability, and its dedication to ensuring a dignified and healthy life for the Yemeni people amidst the exceptional circumstances they are facing.
