An intensive inspection campaign by Waqaa to regulate veterinary facilities in the Kingdom

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing food security and public health, the National Center for Plant Pest and Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Wiqa’), in close cooperation with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), conducted a large-scale inspection campaign targeting veterinary facilities and pharmacies across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This initiative aims to identify violations and ensure adherence to the highest quality standards, which will positively impact food safety and protect the national livestock from any harmful practices.
Development of oversight of veterinary facilities in the Kingdom
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has given considerable attention to the agricultural and livestock sectors. However, rapid development and population growth necessitated a shift from traditional oversight to the establishment of specialized and independent entities. In this context, the role of the "Wiqa'a" Center emerged, established as part of modern national initiatives to unify regulatory and preventative efforts. Regulating the operations of veterinary facilities is no longer a mere routine procedure but has become a fundamental pillar of the biosecurity system. This joint campaign with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority culminates years of diligent work in developing legislation and regulations governing the distribution of veterinary medicines, ensuring that no substandard products enter the market.
Wide geographical scope and thorough auditing
The intensive field inspections covered pharmaceutical sales and distribution facilities across a wide geographical area encompassing the entire Kingdom. Inspection teams were deployed in the Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Eastern Province, Qassim, and Hail regions, extending to Asir, Jazan, Najran, Al-Baha, Tabuk, Al-Jawf, and the Northern Borders. During their visits to these veterinary facilities, the teams focused on verifying professional practice licenses, examining the validity of displayed medications, and meticulously ensuring that owners and employees adhered to proper storage requirements. This rigorous inspection aims directly to curb any malpractices that could threaten both human and animal health.
Strategic dimensions and expected impact of the campaign
These regulatory measures are of paramount importance, extending beyond the local level to encompass regional and international dimensions. Locally, rigorous oversight of veterinary facilities helps protect consumers from zoonotic diseases and strengthens the sustainability of the agricultural sector, a vital economic pillar. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's commitment to implementing the standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) solidifies its position as a leading nation in biosecurity and food safety in the Middle East. Ensuring the quality of veterinary medicines reduces the risk of antimicrobial resistance, a global health issue requiring concerted efforts.
Awareness as the first line of defense
The campaign was not limited to enforcement and penalties; it also included a crucial awareness and educational component. The teams aimed to raise awareness among workers about the importance of adhering to approved regulations, while also warning of the direct risks to public health posed by the misuse of veterinary products. This initiative reflects the integrated efforts of the government to enhance oversight and reduce violations, in line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which seeks to promote the sustainability of the environmental and health sectors. Both entities affirmed their commitment to continuing these periodic monitoring campaigns to deter violators and apply the necessary legal measures against them, thereby contributing to the provision of safe, high-quality products and consumer protection.
