5 tips from the Ministry of Health for cancer prevention and the 10KSA initiative

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote public health and raise community awareness, the Saudi Ministry of Health highlighted five key pillars that effectively contribute to cancer prevention. These guidelines coincide with the health movement spearheaded by leading national initiatives, most notably the "10KSA" initiative launched by Her Royal Highness Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan, the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the United States of America.

The five pillars of cancer prevention

The ministry emphasized that adopting a healthy lifestyle is the first line of defense against many chronic and serious diseases. It identified five daily and medical behaviors that can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing cancer:

  • Quitting smoking immediately: The harm of smoking is not limited to lung cancer, but extends to multiple types of tumors, as tobacco damages the DNA of cells, making quitting the most important step to restoring the body's health.
  • Regular physical activity: Exercise helps regulate hormone levels and boost the immune system, reducing the risk of colon, breast, and uterine cancers.
  • Adopting a balanced diet: focusing on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and reducing processed meats and sugars, provides the body with the antioxidants needed to fight harmful cells.
  • Adherence to preventive vaccinations: The ministry stressed the importance of vaccines such as the hepatitis B vaccine and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, as they play a pivotal role in preventing viral infections that may develop into cancerous tumors.
  • Sun protection: Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the main cause of skin cancer, so it is advisable to use sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure during peak times.

10KSA Initiative: Leading in Health Awareness

It is impossible to discuss cancer prevention in the Kingdom without mentioning the pivotal role played by the "10KSA" initiative. This initiative, which entered the Guinness World Records for forming the world's largest human pink ribbon, has transcended being merely an awareness campaign to become a comprehensive community movement aimed at changing health perceptions within Saudi families.

The initiative focuses on the importance of early detection, not only for breast cancer but for various diseases, and seeks to empower both women and men with health knowledge. Its objectives align with the Kingdom's Vision 2030, specifically the Quality of Life Program, which aims to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the rates of chronic diseases, positively impacting public health and lessening the economic and social burdens associated with delayed treatment.

The integration of official Ministry of Health guidelines with community initiatives such as 10KSA forms the cornerstone of building a vibrant society whose members enjoy health and well-being, with the continued emphasis that prevention is better than a ton of cure.
