Jeddah Municipality ends the exploitation of public parking spaces and removes barriers

The Jeddah Municipality launched a large-scale field campaign aimed at eliminating the illegal practice of converting public parking spaces into private areas. These intensive efforts are part of the municipality's ongoing commitment to improving the urban landscape and addressing visual pollution that negatively impacts the city's overall appearance. The inspections resulted in the clearing of vast areas of streets and public facilities, restoring them to public use. Official sources have confirmed that monitoring will continue to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent any violations that harm the public interest.
Ongoing efforts to prevent the exploitation of public parking spaces in Jeddah
During their intensive inspection tours, the field teams of the Jeddah Municipality uncovered numerous instances of encroachment and misuse of public parking spaces in the Al-Sharafiyah, Al-Balad, Al-Baghdadiyah, and Al-Hamra districts, as well as within the jurisdictions of the University and New Jeddah municipalities. These violations included the installation of electronic locks, iron and wooden barriers, and the use of chairs and building materials to illegally reserve parking spaces. The specialized teams immediately removed all these obstructions and enforced regulations against the violators to ensure that these parking spaces are available to all residents and visitors without any impediments.
Regulatory context and urban landscape improvement initiatives
This strict campaign is part of a comprehensive national plan led by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing in Saudi Arabia, in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Over the past few years, some residential and commercial areas in major cities like Jeddah have suffered from the growing phenomenon of haphazardly reserving public parking spaces in front of buildings and shops, obstructing traffic and exacerbating disputes among residents. Therefore, municipalities have implemented strict regulations to prevent the monopolization of public spaces, and consider the installation of barriers or locks without official authorization a municipal violation punishable by fines and immediate removal, in order to reinforce the rule of law regarding shared facilities.
The expected positive impact of the campaign locally and in urban areas
Eliminating encroachments on public parking spaces directly impacts the daily lives of Jeddah residents and visitors. Locally, these measures help alleviate traffic congestion in busy neighborhoods and make finding parking easier, reducing commuting time and carbon emissions from constantly circling in search of a spot. From a tourism and urban perspective, removing haphazard structures and electronic locks enhances Jeddah's appeal as a leading global tourist destination on the Red Sea coast, presenting the city in an organized manner that reflects the Kingdom's urban and economic development. The Municipality urged everyone to cooperate and report any violations through the designated official channels.
