Basta Khair 2 Initiative in Jeddah: Registration is open to support productive families

The Jeddah Municipality has announced the start of registration for the second season of its pioneering community initiative, "Basta Khair" (Good Deeds Stall), which launches in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan. This initiative aims to enhance social and economic development in the city. Registration will be open from the 7th to the 27th of Ramadan, providing a valuable opportunity for citizens to showcase their products in an organized and supportive environment.

Background of the initiative and its strategic objectives

The “Basta Khair” initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to achieve the goals of Vision 2030, which focuses heavily on community development, increasing the contribution of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the national economy, and empowering diverse segments of society. The initiative aims to organize the work of street vendors and home-based businesses, transforming their informal activities into structured operations that contribute to improving the city’s urban landscape and provide sustainable income sources for participants. Following the success of its first season, the second season returns with greater momentum and expanded participation to reach an even larger number of beneficiaries.

Target groups and participation requirements

In its second season, the initiative targets specific segments of society with the aim of providing them with direct support. These groups include:

  • Divorced women and widows.
  • Social security beneficiaries.
  • Officially registered productive families.
  • People with disabilities who are able to work.
  • Beneficiaries of approved charitable organizations.

This priority aims to ensure that support reaches the most needy groups, and to empower them economically to become productive individuals and effective contributors to the development process.

Facilities and location: A fully integrated work environment

To provide an ideal working environment, the Jeddah Municipality allocated a fully equipped site in the Al-Salamah district to host more than 30 stalls. The site was provided with all the essential services necessary for the participants' success, including electrical connections, adequate lighting, and standardized signage displaying the initiative's visual identity, lending an aesthetically pleasing and organized feel to the event. These facilities not only contribute to the participants' comfort but also attract visitors and shoppers, thus increasing the chances of success for the showcased projects.

Expected economic and social impact

Majed bin Omar Al-Sulami, Director General of Community Service at the Municipality, explained that the second season will see an expansion in participation, emphasizing the continued efforts to achieve the initiative's goals. "Basta Khair 2" is expected to have a multifaceted positive impact. Locally, it contributes to creating temporary job opportunities and additional income sources for low-income families, while also promoting a culture of entrepreneurship and self-reliance. Nationally, the initiative aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 in strengthening community engagement, supporting the non-oil local economy, and providing a successful model that can be replicated in other cities across the Kingdom.
