Jazan rains: Meteorology warns of weather fluctuations continuing until the evening

The National Center for Meteorology issued an urgent weather alert today, warning of rainfall in Jazan , accompanied by strong winds that will significantly reduce horizontal visibility. The expected weather conditions also include hail, flash floods in valleys, and severe thunderstorms, urging citizens and residents in the region and its governorates to exercise extreme caution until 8:00 PM.
Details of the weather conditions and the provinces affected by the Jazan rainstorm
The National Center for Meteorology explained that these weather fluctuations will directly affect several governorates in the Jazan region, particularly the mountainous and highland areas. The list includes Al-Harath, Al-Dayer Bani Malik, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, and Haroub. These areas are characterized by their topography, which makes them more susceptible to the formation of thunderstorms and rain.
These rains are accompanied by strong downdrafts, stirring up dust and reducing visibility on highways and in open areas. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while driving and to avoid floodplains and wadis, which may experience sudden flash floods due to the heavy rainfall.
The unique geographical nature of Jazan and its impact on the climate
The Jazan region boasts a unique geographical location, combining coastal plains overlooking the Red Sea with towering mountain ranges, some exceeding 2,000 meters above sea level. This significant topographical contrast plays a crucial role in shaping the region's local climate; humid air masses from the Red Sea converge with the mountainous terrain, leading to condensation and the formation of cumulonimbus clouds that produce heavy seasonal rainfall.
Historically, Jazan has been known as one of the rainiest regions in Saudi Arabia, making it a major food basket for the Kingdom thanks to its fertile agricultural terraces and abundant water resources. However, this mountainous terrain presents ongoing challenges related to managing flash flood risks and protecting communities located in the wadi beds.
Developmental and agricultural impacts and local safety measures
Locally and regionally, these rains are of dual importance. On the one hand, they contribute to replenishing groundwater and supporting the vital agricultural sector in Jazan, which is renowned for its mango, Khawlani coffee, and aromatic grain cultivation. On the other hand, these weather conditions necessitate a full mobilization of security and service agencies.
In this context, the Saudi Civil Defense is intensifying its awareness campaigns through media outlets and social media platforms, emphasizing the need to adhere to instructions and avoid crossing valleys during flash floods. Local municipalities are also working to clear flood channels and ensure the readiness of rainwater drainage networks to mitigate any potential damage to infrastructure or public and private property.
