Planting trees in Jazan mosques: an environmental initiative with the participation of 1,152 volunteers

In a move reflecting a deep environmental and social commitment, the Jazan branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance launched a unique initiative to plant trees in the courtyards of mosques and prayer halls, in strategic cooperation with the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification. This step comes as part of the "Tree Planting Season" initiative, which aims to transform the courtyards of mosques into green spaces that are pleasing to the eye and contribute to improving the environment.

Details of the initiative and record-breaking figures

The initiative witnessed widespread community engagement, targeting the planting and landscaping of 40 mosques and prayer halls across Jazan city and the governorates of Sabya, Ahad Al Masarihah, and Samtah. The campaign achieved remarkable results in volunteer work, with 1,152 volunteers contributing over 5,700 volunteer hours, reflecting the inherent spirit of giving among the region's residents and their desire to serve mosques and the community.

National context: Vision 2030 and Green Saudi Arabia

This initiative cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader national context of the "Saudi Green Initiative," launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince as a central component of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. This national effort aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the coming decades to combat desertification, reduce carbon emissions, and improve quality of life. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs' participation in this movement demonstrates the integrated nature of government efforts to achieve environmental sustainability goals.

Religious and social dimensions of afforestation

In addition to its environmental goals, the initiative carries significant religious and cultural dimensions. Caring for and planting trees in mosques falls under the umbrella of mosque architecture and preparing them for worshippers. Furthermore, planting and cultivating trees is encouraged in Islam and considered a continuous act of charity. The presence of trees in mosque courtyards contributes to a more pleasant atmosphere, provides shade, and creates an aesthetic and spiritual ambiance that helps worshippers achieve tranquility and focus.

Enhancing vegetation cover in Jazan

The Jazan region boasts a unique environmental and climatic diversity, making it a fertile ground for successful afforestation projects. This initiative aims to enhance the region's vegetation cover and contribute to mitigating sand encroachment and land degradation. Through these activities, the Ministry also seeks to raise environmental awareness among community members, instill the principles of conserving natural resources, and establish mosques as exemplary models of environmental sustainability and public cleanliness.
