Registration for Itikaf in the Two Holy Mosques 1447: Conditions and steps for men and women

The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques announced the opening of online registration for those wishing to perform the Sunnah of Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan 1447 AH. This step comes within the framework of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to organize and facilitate the affairs of visitors to the Two Holy Mosques and to provide a safe and organized spiritual environment for men and women observing Itikaf from around the world.

What is I'tikaf and what is its importance in Islam?

I'tikaf is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Linguistically, it means to remain in a place and dedicate oneself to it. In Islamic law, it refers to a Muslim's seclusion in the mosque with the intention of drawing closer to God Almighty, devoting themselves to worship through prayer, reciting the Quran, remembrance of God, and supplication. Muslims are keen to observe this Sunnah, especially during the last ten days of Ramadan, seeking Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), which God described as being better than a thousand months. I'tikaf offers a unique opportunity to disconnect from worldly distractions, purify the soul, reflect on one's actions, and renew one's covenant with the Creator in the holiest of places and during the most blessed of times.

The importance and impact of seclusion in the Two Holy Mosques

The practice of i'tikaf (seclusion for worship) in the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina holds special significance and immense spiritual value for Muslims. Prayer and worship in these two holy sites are rewarded with multiplied blessings, leading millions of Muslims worldwide to yearn for the opportunity to perform i'tikaf there. This global demand makes organizing i'tikaf a major responsibility, with Saudi authorities working to provide all necessary services for those observing it, including designated areas, meals (iftar and suhoor), security and hygiene, and religious guidance. The successful management of this ritual reflects positively on the Kingdom's ability to serve pilgrims and reinforces its position as the heart of the Islamic world.

Details and registration dates for Itikaf for the year 1447 AH

The authority clarified that the registration process will be entirely electronic through its official portal, to ensure transparency and equal opportunities for applicants. The main details are as follows:

  • Registration begins: Registration starts on Friday, the 3rd of Ramadan 1447 AH, at 11:00 AM.

Sorting applications and announcing results

After the application period ends, the relevant authorities will review and sort all applications to ensure they meet the approved terms and conditions, taking into account the capacity limits of each site. Applicants whose applications are accepted will then be notified via SMS to the mobile phone numbers registered in the system, confirming their granting of a retreat permit.
