Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon violate the ceasefire north of the Litani River

The Israeli occupation army renewed its military aggression against Lebanese territory today, carrying out a series of intense airstrikes targeting residential buildings and sites in towns deep within southern Lebanon. The bombing struck the towns of Jarjouh, Qanarit, and Kfour, just hours after earlier strikes that resulted in casualties, which the occupation claimed targeted Hezbollah elements.
These raids take on particular strategic significance given the location of the targeted towns, all situated north of the Litani River, far from the immediate border with the occupied territories. This escalation comes at a highly sensitive time, as the Lebanese army prepares to present a comprehensive plan to the government next month, aimed at establishing a mechanism for disarming Hezbollah in these areas, thus complementing efforts to extend state sovereignty in the border region south of the river.
The context of the conflict and the challenges to stability
These developments on the ground further complicate the security and political landscape in the region, as the Israeli occupation continues its persistent violations of Lebanese sovereignty, disregarding the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2014. Observers note that targeting areas north of the Litani River constitutes an expansion of the rules of engagement and an Israeli attempt to impose a new military reality that precedes any future security arrangements that may be sponsored by international parties.
Historically, southern Lebanon has been an open battleground, with the international community, through UN resolutions, seeking to establish a buffer zone free of illegal weapons to ensure stability. However, the continued Israeli raids undermine diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and raise serious concerns about a slide into a full-blown confrontation whose repercussions could extend beyond Lebanon to encompass the entire region.
Humanitarian repercussions and regional concerns
On the humanitarian front, these attacks exacerbate the suffering of civilians in southern villages and towns, leading to waves of internal displacement as people flee the bombardment, in addition to the extensive destruction of infrastructure and property. The international community views this escalation with grave concern, warning that continued violations of the ceasefire could undermine the chances for a political solution and return the region to square one of reciprocal violence.
