Combating cholera in Yemen: King Salman Center serves 130 beneficiaries

The emergency cholera response project in Yemen, supported by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, continued to provide vital medical and preventative services, benefiting 130 individuals during the period from January 7 to 13, 2026. These efforts are part of ongoing endeavors to contain the epidemic and limit its spread across various Yemeni governorates.

Preventive measures and comprehensive examinations

This week, the project's activities included conducting thorough and comprehensive screenings for suspected cholera cases. Efforts focused on key transit points and border crossings, including the airports of Aden, Al-Rayyan, and Seiyun, as well as the border crossings of Al-Hafiya, Al-Wadi'ah, and Razih. These measures covered a wide geographical area encompassing coastal and inland Hadramawt, Aden, Hajjah, and Sa'dah. The results demonstrated the success of the preventative measures, as no confirmed or suspected cases of cholera were recorded among the travelers screened during this period.

Community awareness: the first line of defense

Believing that prevention is better than cure, the project placed great emphasis on health awareness and education. A total of 278 intensive awareness sessions were conducted, benefiting 5,123 individuals from various segments of Yemeni society. These sessions focused on explaining modes of transmission, the importance of personal hygiene, and how to disinfect water, with the aim of raising health awareness among citizens and empowering them to protect themselves and their families from the risk of infection.

The context of the health crisis and the importance of intervention

These efforts are of paramount importance given the fragile health situation in Yemen, which has suffered for years from the repercussions of conflict and the deterioration of its sanitation and clean water infrastructure, making the country a breeding ground for epidemics such as cholera. Cholera is one of the diseases that has posed a major challenge to the Yemeni health system in recent years, making continued monitoring and surveillance at entry points and health centers an urgent necessity to prevent new outbreaks that could overwhelm the health sector.

Integrated logistical and medical support

The emergency response project's role extends beyond screening and monitoring to include strengthening the capacities of Yemeni health facilities. The project provides essential medical supplies for cholera treatment, including intravenous and oral rehydration solutions, necessary antibiotics, sterilization materials, and personal protective equipment for medical personnel. It also works to expand bed capacity in isolation and treatment centers to ensure full preparedness to accommodate any potential increase in cases, reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, to supporting the brotherly Yemeni people and alleviating their humanitarian suffering.
