The Ministry of Education sets the official age for admission according to the Gregorian calendar

The Saudi Ministry of Education has announced important updates regarding the registration of new students, specifying the official age for admission, according to the Gregorian calendar, as the primary criterion for enrollment in first grade and kindergarten for the academic year 1448 AH (2026 CE). This announcement reflects the Ministry's commitment to organizing the educational process and ensuring students' enrollment in grade levels appropriate to their age and developmental abilities.
Evolution of the standard age criteria for admission to the educational system
Historically, student admission mechanisms in Saudi schools have undergone several strategic transformations aimed at improving the quality of educational outcomes. In past decades, the Hijri calendar was primarily used to determine student ages, sometimes leading to slight variations in age groups within the same grade due to the nature of the lunar year. With the development of the education system and the Kingdom's pursuit of global standards within the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, the need for standardization became apparent. Therefore, adopting the Gregorian calendar for determining the official age for admission became a crucial step that ensures the stability of academic planning, facilitates accurate registration for parents, and aligns the local system with international educational standards.
Details of the age groups for the first grade of primary school
Regarding enrollment in the first grade of primary school, the Ministry of Education clarified that there are two main categories. The first category includes children who turned six years old or older before August 24, 2020, and these children are eligible for direct admission. The second category includes children who are less than six years old by no more than 90 days, meaning those born between August 25, 2020, and November 22, 2020. The Ministry stipulated that for this category to be accepted, the student must have completed a full year of kindergarten to ensure their academic, social, and psychological readiness to successfully integrate into the primary school environment.
Registration requirements for kindergarten stages
Regarding kindergarten, the Ministry has outlined precise details to ensure a fair and appropriate age distribution. Registration for KG1 is open to children born between August 24, 2022, and August 24, 2023. KG2 is for children born between August 25, 2021, and August 25, 2022. KG3 is for children born between August 25, 2020, and August 24, 2021. This precise division ensures that the age requirements for all levels are met and that educational care is provided that is appropriate for each developmental stage.
The positive impact of standardizing registration criteria on the quality of education
This meticulous organization is of paramount importance and has a far-reaching positive impact. Locally, strict adherence to the standard age range contributes to a more cohesive learning environment within classrooms, enabling teachers to implement modern teaching strategies tailored to the students' similar developmental levels. It also reduces cognitive and social gaps among classmates. Regionally and internationally, standardizing admission criteria based on the Gregorian calendar aligns the Saudi education system more closely with global standards. This alignment facilitates the transfer of students studying abroad or returning from overseas, ensures the smooth equivalency of academic qualifications and educational stages, and enhances the global standing of Saudi education, underscoring the Ministry's commitment to regulating early childhood education standards and improving the quality of the foundational stages.
