Activating the historical Hajj route in Jeddah: A cultural journey for the pilgrims

In a qualitative step aimed at linking the present with the glorious past, the Ministry of Culture announced the activation of the first phase of the “Historical Hajj Trail” in the historic Jeddah area (Al-Balad), where the area received groups of pilgrims to have a unique cultural and tourist experience that simulates the journey of pilgrims through the ages.

Jeddah: The gateway to the Two Holy Mosques throughout history

This project is not merely a tourist route, but a restoration of the pivotal role that Jeddah has played since the Rightly Guided Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) designated it as the port for Mecca in 647 AD. Since then, Jeddah has been the first gateway for pilgrims arriving by sea, where the emotions of reaching the Holy Land blend with the fragrance of Islamic history and the unique architecture of the Hejaz.

This step is of great importance given the status of “Historic Jeddah”, which is registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, making the Hajj route a journey into the depths of global human heritage, and not just a local event.

Trip details: From the port to Bab Makkah

The route is designed to offer a comprehensive narrative beginning from the moment pilgrims arrive in ancient times. The journey starts at Bab al-Bunt , which once served as the gate of Jeddah's sea wall, and continues past the Red Sea Museum , which features interactive exhibits that tell the stories of navigation and maritime pilgrimages.

Visitors continue their journey through the ancient alleyways of "Al-Balad" (the old town), stopping at prominent landmarks including:

  • The archaeological site of Al-Shuna: which tells the story of trade and grain storage.
  • Historical mosques: such as the Uthman Ibn Affan Mosque, the Al-Maamar Mosque, and the Al-Maghribi Mosque, which represent the spirituality of the place.
  • Heritage houses: such as the Noor Wali House and the famous Nassif House, where King Abdulaziz - may God have mercy on him - stayed, which adds a political and historical dimension to the trip.
  • Old markets: such as the Al-Alawi market, which was the economic lifeline for pilgrims and city residents.

The journey concludes at Bab Makkah , the eastern gate that used to bid farewell to pilgrims as they headed on foot or on horseback towards the holy sites, in an accurate simulation of the ancient historical route.

Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030

The activation of the “Historical Hajj Route” aligns directly with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, specifically the “Guests of God Service Program,” which seeks not only to increase the number of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims but also to enrich their religious and cultural experience. The project aims to transform the Hajj journey from a mere religious ritual into a comprehensive spiritual and cultural experience that leaves a lasting impression on visitors, thereby reinforcing the Kingdom’s position as a leading global tourist and cultural destination.
