Somali army kills 29 al-Shabaab militants in airstrikes

In a new development on the ground reflecting the Somali state's determination to eradicate terrorism, the Somali army announced today a significant military victory that resulted in the killing of 29 militants from the al-Shabaab movement, which is linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist organization. This operation was carried out through a series of precise airstrikes targeting the group's strongholds in the Middle Shabelle region of southern Somalia, representing a major blow to the extremist group's logistical and human capabilities.
The Somali Ministry of Defense stated in an official statement that the national armed forces, in close coordination with international partners supporting counter-terrorism efforts in the Horn of Africa, conducted successive airstrikes during the night. These strikes targeted gatherings and hideouts of the al-Shabaab militia in the aforementioned area, resulting in the destruction of a large number of military vehicles and weapons caches that were intended for use in imminent terrorist attacks against unarmed civilians and security forces.
Context of the total war against terrorism
This successful military operation comes within the context of the “total war” declared by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud against Al-Shabaab since assuming power. For over a year, Somalia has been witnessing a large-scale military campaign involving the national army, supported by local clans (known as “Mawesley”), and with air and intelligence support from international partners, most notably the United States and the African Union forces. This strategy aims to recapture areas controlled by the group for many years and to undermine its financial and military influence.
The strategic importance of the Shabelle region
Operations in the Middle Shabelle region are of paramount strategic importance due to their geographical proximity to the capital, Mogadishu. These areas serve as a security belt around the capital, as government forces strive to secure main roads and prevent the infiltration of terrorist elements into major cities. The army's success in destroying the movement's logistical capabilities in this area directly contributes to strengthening security and stability in the capital and surrounding regions, and cuts off the supply lines upon which the movement relies for its movements.
Future challenges and aspirations
Despite the heavy losses suffered by al-Shabaab, the group remains a security threat in the Horn of Africa, relying on guerrilla tactics and suicide bombings. However, continued military pressure and a series of precise airstrikes, such as those carried out today, strengthen the Somali government's chances of establishing full control over its territory and support international efforts to secure waterways and combat cross-border extremism. This promises a new era of stability that could positively impact the country's economic and social development.
