International Day of Education 2026: Quality programs from the Arab Bureau of Education

Every year on January 24th, the world celebrates the International Day of Education , a UN event that takes on special significance this year (2026) under the theme “Youth Empowerment to Shape Education.” This celebration underscores the pivotal role of education in achieving peace and sustainable development, not only as a human right but also as a fundamental pillar for building advanced societies.
Vision of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States
In this context, the Director General of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Muqbil, stated that this occasion represents a clear global call to reposition youth at the heart of the educational process. He pointed out that young people are no longer merely recipients of knowledge, but have become active and influential partners in developing the educational system and shaping its future, in accordance with the demands of the digital age and its rapid changes.
Dr. Al-Muqbil explained that this year’s slogan reflects a growing international awareness of the importance of empowering young people to contribute directly to the design of educational policies, the development of curricula, and the creation of modern learning methods that reflect their aspirations and invest their creative energies.
Historical background and global significance
The celebration of this day traces its roots to a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted in December 2018, which designated January 24 as the International Day of Education, recognizing the role of education in achieving peace and development. This occasion serves as an annual reminder of the need to fulfill international commitments to Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Leadership support and Gulf orientation
At the regional level, the Director General of the Arab Bureau of Education affirmed that Their Majesties, Highnesses, and Excellencies, the leaders of the member states, give the education sector the highest priority, supporting the trend towards involving youth in educational decision-making. This support aligns with the national visions of the Gulf states, which focus on building a vibrant society and a prosperous economy based on qualified human capital.
Quality programs for a promising future
Dr. Al-Muqbil concluded his statement by emphasizing that the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States is working diligently, in close cooperation with the ministries of education in member states and regional and international partners, to implement a range of high-quality programs. These programs aim to prepare conscious young generations equipped with leadership skills and the ability to innovate, so they can become future leaders and the primary drivers of development in the region.
