Five honey production stations are ready at a cost of 38 million riyals to support farmers

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing food security and supporting the local economy, the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Program “Reef Saudi Arabia” announced the completion of five honey production stations at a total cost exceeding SAR 38.2 million. These pioneering development projects are located in several vital regions, including Asir, Jazan, Madinah, Hail, and Tabuk. This achievement paves the way for the actual operation of these stations, representing a qualitative leap in the agriculture and beekeeping sector, and primarily aimed at achieving self-sufficiency and supporting small farmers in the Kingdom.
The evolution of the beekeeping sector: from traditional methods to modern honey production stations
Historically, beekeeping in the Arabian Peninsula has been deeply intertwined with local culture and a rich agricultural heritage. Ancestors relied on traditional methods to extract honey from the mountains and valleys, particularly in southern regions like Asir and Al-Baha, renowned for their diverse flora and fauna. With economic development and population growth, the need to transition from limited traditional methods to modern and sustainable agricultural technologies has become increasingly apparent. This is where the importance of honey production stations launched by the “Reef” program lies, representing a bridge between the authenticity of the past and the technologies of the future. These specialized stations not only produce honey but also rear queen bees and produce bee colonies, addressing the long-standing challenges of a shortage of high-quality local bee strains and reliance on imports.
Reef program efforts to expand and protect local breeds
Majed Al-Buraikan, the official spokesperson for the "Reef Saudi Arabia" program, explained that these projects provide significant support for the development of the honey sector and contribute directly to achieving self-sufficiency by supporting small producers and improving the quality of their products. He noted that work is currently progressing rapidly on two similar projects for producing bee packages in Najran and Taif, in addition to completing construction work at the queen bee station in Baljurashi Governorate. Al-Buraikan stated that establishing production and insemination centers effectively contributes to protecting local bee breeds from extinction or uncontrolled hybridization, and increases the number of colonies adapted to the local climate, thus raising the overall productivity of the sector.
Economic dimensions and expected impact locally and regionally
The impact of these projects extends beyond simply providing honey to local consumers; it encompasses broad economic and environmental dimensions. Locally, these initiatives contribute to creating new and sustainable job opportunities for young people in rural areas and train national talent in the latest technologies to reduce wasteful traditional practices. They also ensure a year-round supply of local bee products, eliminating the need for imports and thus preserving cash flow within the national economy.
At the regional and international levels, enhancing the quality of Saudi honey, which enjoys an excellent global reputation thanks to its unique varieties such as Sidr and Samar honey, opens up broad prospects for exporting surpluses in the future, thus strengthening the Kingdom's position as a leading producer of premium honey in the Middle East. Furthermore, these stations play a vital role in promoting biodiversity by effectively contributing to the pollination of agricultural crops, which has a positive impact on the environment and combats desertification.
Saudi Vision 2030 and the sustainability of the agricultural sector
These ambitious projects are part of the “Saudi Countryside” program strategy to empower beekeepers in all regions, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the sustainability of the agricultural sector, diversify sources of income, and achieve balanced rural development that ensures a prosperous future for future generations and places the Kingdom among the leading countries in the field of food security and sustainable agriculture.
