Requirements and updates for the Certified Translator Program in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Commission for Literature, Publishing and Translation has announced a comprehensive update to the admission requirements for its Certified Translator Program. This strategic step aims to enhance the professional standards of translators and improve the quality of linguistic output. The update aligns with the growing needs of the translation sector both within the Kingdom and internationally, ensuring the provision of high-quality linguistic services.

The development of the translation sector in the Kingdom and Vision 2030

Historically, the translation sector in Saudi Arabia has undergone radical transformations, particularly with the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, which emphasized the importance of cultural and intellectual exchange with the world. The Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission was established to regulate this vital sector, which previously suffered from a lack of unified standards and precise official accreditations. This highlighted the urgent need for a regulatory framework to ensure the quality of language translation, making updates to this program essential for unifying efforts and documenting national expertise according to the highest international standards in the translation industry.

Two main pathways to enroll in the Certified Translator program

The authority has adopted two main admission tracks: the first is the “Practitioner Track,” which targets those wishing to enter the field or develop their professional skills. This track requires attendance at a mandatory preparatory training program before applying for accreditation exams. The second track is the “Experienced Professionals Track,” which includes translators with at least five years of extensive practical experience in the translation sector.

Precise requirements for the practitioners' path

The Authority has established rigorous criteria for accepting applicants into the practitioners' track. Applicants must hold a recognized academic qualification (diploma, bachelor's, master's, or doctorate) in translation, linguistics, or literature. If the qualification is in another field, applicants must demonstrate at least two years of practical experience, submit a portfolio, or provide letters of recommendation. The Authority also requires applicants to pass an ethical competency test for the translation profession to ensure professional commitment.

Experienced track and direct accreditation standards

For the experienced translators track, the authority has set clear requirements for taking the accreditation exam, most notably proof of at least five years of professional experience and the submission of quantitative evidence of translation work (such as 700,000 words for general translation, 300,000 words for medical or legal translation, 150 hours for audiovisual translation, and 500 hours for oral translation). The authority also allows for the direct awarding of accreditation to some applicants after a comprehensive evaluation of their portfolio, without requiring them to take the exam.

The regional and international impact of developing translation competencies

The importance of these updates extends beyond the local level, encompassing a broad regional and international impact. Locally, the program ensures the protection of clients' rights and the provision of reliable translation services to both the public and private sectors. Regionally, this regulation reinforces the Kingdom's leading position in the Arabic translation market, making Saudi translators the preferred choice for major institutions. Internationally, the presence of certified translators adhering to rigorous standards contributes to the accurate and reliable dissemination of Saudi culture and literature to the world, and supports an effective Saudi presence at international forums and conferences.

Fees and strict ethical controls

The Authority has organized the program with general conditions, including payment of the prescribed fees. The fee for the Practitioners track is 1650 Saudi Riyals (including training and testing), while the fee for the Experienced Individuals track is 750 Riyals. The Authority confirmed that the fees are non-refundable. A minimum attendance of 70% is required for the virtual training program. The Authority also requires all applicants to maintain confidentiality and adhere to the scheduled dates for the in-person tests. Remote testing is available for applicants outside the Kingdom, subject to specific regulations.
