Heavy rains in Jazan: Meteorology warns of weather fluctuations in the Kingdom

Heavy rains fell on Jazan, a region in southwestern Saudi Arabia, on Monday evening, affecting a large number of its governorates and districts. The rainfall was accompanied by hail and strong downdrafts, leading to flash floods in valleys and ravines. Authorities were on full alert to ensure the safety of citizens and residents.
Details of the weather conditions and the provinces affected by heavy rains in Jazan
According to field reports, heavy rainfall was concentrated in the governorates of Haroub, Abu Arish, Al-Ardah, and Al-Harath, as well as several neighboring towns and villages. This weather fluctuation caused significant flooding on roads and main thoroughfares. The National Center for Meteorology had warned in its daily weather report for the Kingdom that the chance of thunderstorms accompanied by hail and dust-raising winds remained high.
The geographical nature of the Jazan region and its climatic impact
The Jazan region is characterized by a unique geography that combines towering mountains with flat coastal plains. This topographical diversity makes it susceptible to constant weather fluctuations, especially during the rainy season. Historically, Jazan has been known as one of the Kingdom's wettest regions, with monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean playing a key role in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds over its highlands, replenishing groundwater and supporting the region's renowned agricultural sector.
Local and regional impacts of weather fluctuations
The impact of these rains extends beyond the environmental sphere to encompass economic and social aspects. Locally, the rainfall contributes to the revitalization of agricultural lands and the replenishment of reservoirs, such as the Wadi Jazan Dam, which positively impacts local crop production. However, the torrential floods necessitate extreme caution from residents to avoid crossing wadis (valleys). Regionally, these weather patterns reflect broader climate changes occurring in the Arabian Peninsula, underscoring the need for enhanced regional coordination in meteorology and early warning systems to mitigate the risks of natural disasters.
Temperatures and active winds in the rest of the Kingdom
In a related context, the National Center for Meteorology's report indicated the continued impact of active winds stirring up dust and sand across large parts of Al-Jawf, the Northern Borders, the Eastern Province, Riyadh, Al-Qassim, Hail, Tabuk, Madinah, and Makkah. As for the highest temperatures recorded today, Al-Ahsa Governorate topped the list with 45 degrees Celsius, followed by Dammam at 42 degrees Celsius, highlighting the significant climatic variations across different regions of the Kingdom at the same time.
