Healthcare system readiness during Hajj season | Latest technologies
Minister of Health Fahd bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel conducted an extensive field tour to assess the readiness of the healthcare system during the Hajj season, aiming to ensure the provision of the best possible medical services to pilgrims. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Pilgrims Service Program, both key pillars of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, designed to enable pilgrims to perform their rituals in complete health and peace of mind.
Over the decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health of pilgrims, with medical care evolving from simple field clinics in the past to integrated medical cities and smart technologies today. This historic development reflects the wise leadership's commitment to harnessing all human and material resources to ensure the safety of the millions of pilgrims who flock annually from all corners of the earth.
The development of healthcare system technologies during the Hajj season
During the tour, the Minister participated in a review of several entities within the healthcare system, including the National Unified Procurement Company for Medicines, Medical Devices, and Supplies (NUPCO). The company presented a range of innovations and modern technologies, most notably drones designed for rapid medical delivery, representing a significant leap forward in the speed of response to emergencies in the Holy Sites.
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) showcased its inspection mechanisms and vehicles, equipped with refrigerators for preserving samples, body cameras to enhance transparency and monitoring, and other modern technologies. In addition, Health Holding Company presented a range of its advanced technological systems for managing ambulance fleets and medical triage, including electric ambulance bicycles designed to expedite the movement of medical personnel through dense crowds.
A fully equipped ambulance fleet and exceptionally fast response time
The health review also included the efforts of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority within its operational plan for this year, which includes a large fleet of more than 3,000 diverse ambulance vehicles. These vehicles include rapid intervention vehicles, electric golf carts, motorcycles, bicycles, and ambulance scooters. To ensure comprehensive coverage, the system is supported by 11 air ambulances within the air support system for immediate response to critical cases.
Among the most notable vehicles showcased during the demonstration were the air-conditioned electric golf carts, designed for handling emergencies in crowded areas and pedestrian walkways. Also prominent were the "Rafida" electric ambulance chairs, which effectively facilitate rapid access to patients in high-traffic areas and provide immediate emergency medical care.
International and local dimensions of medical care during Hajj
The Kingdom's success in managing mass gatherings has not only a local impact but also serves as a global model. Regionally and internationally, these advanced facilities bolster the confidence of Islamic countries and global health organizations in the Kingdom's ability to contain any potential health crises during large gatherings. This high level of preparedness ensures the safe return of pilgrims to their home countries, thus minimizing the risk of cross-border disease transmission.
