Health authorities shut down a facility in Jeddah that was performing obesity surgeries without permits

The Saudi Ministry of Health announced that it has taken strict and decisive measures against a private healthcare facility in Jeddah after it was found to be performing bariatric surgeries without the required permits. This step comes as part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to ensure the provision of safe and reliable healthcare for all citizens and residents, and to implement the highest quality standards in the private healthcare sector.

Field inspections conducted by specialized teams from the Ministry of Health resulted in the discovery of a facility operating without the necessary licenses for bariatric and gastric sleeve surgeries. Consequently, the facility's bariatric surgery unit was immediately shut down and barred from obtaining a license to operate for six months. A fine of 100,000 Saudi Riyals was also imposed, pursuant to Article (20) of the Private Healthcare Institutions Law, as a deterrent measure to prevent the recurrence of such serious violations.

Historical context and risks of unlicensed bariatric surgery

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a significant surge in healthcare development, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030, which aims to improve quality of life and enhance the efficiency of medical services. Historically, weight loss surgeries were performed on a limited scale, but with rising obesity rates globally and locally, the demand for these procedures has increased dramatically. The Ministry of Health responded to this development by establishing strict protocols and precise requirements for hospitals and centers wishing to offer this service, ensuring the availability of qualified medical personnel and the necessary equipment to manage any potential complications. Therefore, addressing the phenomenon of performing bariatric surgeries without permits is an extension of the state's policy to protect the health security of society and prevent the exploitation of patients' need for treatment.

The expected impact of strict oversight on the health sector

This decisive action by the Ministry of Health has far-reaching positive effects at the local and regional levels. Locally, this decision strengthens patients' confidence in the Saudi healthcare system, sending a clear message that human health is a red line that cannot be crossed or left vulnerable to unlicensed medical practices. It also helps protect lives from serious complications that can result from surgical procedures performed in unsuitable environments. Regionally and internationally, this regulatory approach reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leader in implementing rigorous healthcare regulations, which is reflected positively in Saudi healthcare performance indicators in global reports and makes the Saudi healthcare sector a model of discipline and transparency.

A community call to improve the quality of health services

In a related context, the Ministry of Health called upon all members of society to be active partners in health oversight. It urged citizens and residents to report any observations or violations related to health services, whether concerning poor hygiene, mistreatment, or suspected provision of unlicensed medical services, by contacting the unified call center (937) directly. The Ministry affirmed that it will continue its surprise and periodic inspection tours to ensure that all facilities comply with approved health regulations and requirements, thereby enhancing patient safety and improving the quality of health services provided throughout the Kingdom.
