Health awareness for children: Modern methods for building a healthy and sound generation

Health education for children is the cornerstone of building strong societies free from chronic diseases. In this context, Professor Abdulmu'in Eid Al-Agha, Professor and Consultant of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, emphasized in an interview with Al-Youm newspaper that traditional methods of guiding young children are no longer effective in the modern era. He explained that relying solely on traditional commands and prohibitions, such as "Do this" or "Avoid that," without providing a convincing explanation linking the behavior to the consequence, reduces a child's responsiveness and diminishes their intrinsic motivation to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

The historic shift in health guidance methods for emerging generations

For decades, healthcare and education relied heavily on direct parental control and the imposition of strict, unquestioning rules within the home. However, with the advent of modern technology and the influx of digital information, today's children are more curious and aware of their surroundings. This historical shift has compelled health and educational institutions to develop their awareness tools. Children are no longer passive recipients of orders, but rather intelligent partners who need to understand the reasons behind every piece of advice and to know the answer to the question: "What will happen to my body and health if I don't adhere to these behaviors?" Moving from a language of coercion to one of scientific and logical persuasion is the only way to address modern health challenges.

Key themes for promoting health awareness among children

Dr. Al-Agha pointed to three main areas that should be focused on in order to link daily behaviors with tangible results that the child understands and applies independently:

  • First: Healthy Sleep and Growth Hormone Release: It's not enough to simply tell a child to go to bed early; they must be made aware that deep nighttime sleep is the golden window during which the body releases growth hormone, which is responsible for increased height and normal physical development. Conversely, constant late nights and disrupted sleep lead to an imbalance in this hormone, which can cause stunted growth, poor concentration, and academic difficulties.
  • Second: Proper nutrition and the risks of cumulative obesity: Children should be made aware that the harmful effects of unhealthy meals don't appear immediately, but rather accumulate gradually, leading to weight gain and obesity. Ignoring this weight gain increases the likelihood of developing insulin resistance, which may later progress to type 2 diabetes, in addition to negative effects on the joints and heart, and psychological problems such as bullying and loss of self-confidence.
  • Third: Rationalizing the use of electronic devices: Excessive use of smartphones isolates children in a virtual world, and causes physical inactivity, sleep disorders, and weakened social skills and direct communication with those around them.

Parental example and its future impact on building a vibrant society

Professor Al-Agha emphasized the importance of parents setting a positive example for their children; it is impossible to convince a child to stay away from screens or go to bed early while the parents themselves do the exact opposite at home. Adopting a balanced lifestyle within the family fosters positive behavior in children through consistent rewards and encouragement.

At the local and regional levels, early investment in children's health education directly contributes to reducing the incidence of chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, thus lessening the future economic and healthcare burden on the medical sector. At the international level, building health-conscious generations ensures the development of a productive workforce capable of leading societies towards sustainable development and lifelong well-being.
