The Haramain High-Speed Railway: A modern and advanced transportation experience for pilgrims

is witnessing The Haramain High-Speed Railway an increasing influx of pilgrims traveling from Medina to Mecca, reflecting the significant development of the transportation infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. These journeys are part of an integrated system combining speed, comfort, and ease of travel between the two holy cities, making this pioneering project the fastest, safest, and most reliable means of transportation between the Two Holy Mosques.
The project's roots and the Kingdom's ambitious vision
This railway project is one of the Kingdom's most significant historical achievements. Its creation stemmed from the urgent need to alleviate traffic congestion and facilitate the movement of millions of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah annually. Officially launched in 2018, the project has become a landmark in the history of public transportation in the Middle East. This achievement aligns perfectly with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes serving the guests of God and aims to host millions of Muslims from around the world, providing them with the highest quality services from their arrival until their departure.
The economic and international impact of the largest transport projects
The importance of this mega-project extends far beyond its role as a transportation hub; its impact is felt on local, regional, and international levels. Locally, the project has created thousands of jobs for young Saudis and bolstered the national economy by stimulating trade and tourism between Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah. Regionally, it stands as the largest public transportation project in the Middle East, reinforcing the Kingdom's position as a leader in developing smart infrastructure. Internationally, providing a safe, fast, and environmentally friendly mode of transport reflects the Kingdom's commitment to offering the best possible experience for Muslims worldwide, leaving a profound and positive impression on pilgrims and Umrah performers returning home.
The Haramain High-Speed Railway: Record-breaking numbers and huge capacity
As part of its ongoing preparations, Saudi Railways (SAR) announced a few days ago that it has increased the operational capacity of the Haramain High-Speed Railway during the Hajj season to more than 2.21 million seats. This step reflects the continuous expansion of services for pilgrims and meets the growing demand for travel between Mecca and Medina. These measures confirm SAR's readiness and comprehensive preparedness to provide highly efficient transportation services, with this year's Hajj season capacity representing an increase of over 210,000 seats compared to last year.
With operations expected to run 5,308 flights during the season, an increase of approximately 11%, this will enhance traffic efficiency and provide more options for pilgrims. The number of daily flights during peak times will exceed 142, contributing to smoother movement of pilgrims between Makkah and Madinah, reducing waiting times, and improving the overall travel experience.
