The Haramain High-Speed Railway transported 800,000 passengers during the Hajj season of 1447 AH

has The Haramain High-Speed Railway achieved an exceptional milestone in serving pilgrims, successfully transporting over 800,000 passengers since the launch of its operational plan for the 1447 AH Hajj season. This record was achieved through 3,649 trips to date, according to Mr. Khalid bin Yousef Al-Farhan, the official spokesperson for Saudi Railways (SAR). These massive operational efforts are part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing endeavors to facilitate the movement of pilgrims and Umrah performers, and to enhance traffic flow between Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah, ensuring a safe and comfortable travel experience.
The historical role of the Haramain High-Speed Railway in facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage
Given the overall context and historical background, transporting millions of pilgrims between the two holy cities has always posed a significant logistical challenge over the decades. In the past, the journey relied primarily on buses and cars, resulting in long hours of travel and severe traffic congestion, especially during peak seasons. With the official launch of the Haramain High-Speed Railway in 2018, the Kingdom's transportation system underwent a qualitative and historic transformation. This mega-project came as a radical and innovative solution to reduce travel time and provide a safe and sustainable means of transportation, reflecting the wise leadership's commitment to developing infrastructure to serve pilgrims to the Two Holy Mosques according to the highest international standards.
The fastest electric trains in the Middle East
Al-Farhan emphasized that this project is the fastest and most efficient means of transportation between Mecca and Medina. The train covers the 453-kilometer distance in approximately two hours and fifteen minutes, with an operating speed of up to 300 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest electric trains in the world. The train route extends through five main stations equipped with the latest technologies, including: Mecca Station, Medina Station, Jeddah (Sulaimaniyah) Station, King Abdullah Economic City (Rabigh) Station, and King Abdulaziz International Airport Station in Jeddah.
The train also represents the fastest direct means of transportation between King Abdulaziz International Airport and Makkah station, with the journey taking approximately 50 minutes. This direct connection enhances the smooth flow of pilgrims arriving by air, allowing them to travel to the holy sites with ease. Saudi Railways (SAR) had previously announced its operational plan for the 1447 AH Hajj season, which includes operating more than 5,300 trips and providing over 2.2 million seats, supporting the Kingdom's efforts to serve the pilgrims.
The local and international impact of the success of the transport system
The significance of this operational success extends beyond the local aspects of alleviating traffic congestion and reducing carbon emissions to protect the environment; its impact is regional and international. Internationally, this achievement highlights the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's exceptional ability to manage massive crowds and provide state-of-the-art infrastructure comparable to that of developed nations. The successful and precise transportation of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in just a few days reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leading global model in managing major religious events.
Furthermore, this remarkable development in the transportation sector aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to host 30 million Umrah and Hajj pilgrims annually. Providing a seamless and comfortable travel experience leaves a profound and positive impression on pilgrims returning home from around the world, reflecting the Kingdom's remarkable efforts in serving Islam and Muslims, and underscoring its pivotal and leading role in the Islamic world.
