Hajj season: 70,000 vehicles cross towards Mecca

As part of the extensive organizational and operational efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the General Authority for Roads recorded the passage of more than 70,000 vehicles through the roads leading to Mecca, coinciding with the start of Hajj season . These statistics underscore the scale of the tireless work aimed at facilitating the movement of pilgrims and enhancing the efficiency of transportation across the extensive road network in all directions leading to the Holy City, thus ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for the pilgrims.

The development of the transportation network to serve pilgrims throughout history

The Hajj pilgrimage was not always as easy as it is today. In past centuries, pilgrim caravans traversed thousands of kilometers along rugged desert routes, such as the famous Darb Zubaydah, on journeys that lasted for months and were fraught with hardship and danger. With the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the wise leadership prioritized the development of its infrastructure. Today, we are witnessing a remarkable transformation, as those ancient routes have been transformed into a vast network of highways, designed according to the highest international engineering standards. This historic development reflects the Kingdom's unwavering and continuous commitment to dedicating all its material and human resources to serving the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors, transforming the arduous Hajj journey into a comfortable and safe spiritual experience.

Traffic details towards the Holy City

The General Authority for Roads, through its detailed statistics, clarified the distribution of traffic across the various land routes leading to Mecca. Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road topped the list in terms of traffic density, recording 24,609 vehicles. The Taif-Mecca Road via Al-Sail Al-Kabeer came in second with 11,684 vehicles, followed by the Medina-Mecca Road with 9,578 vehicles.

Statistics also showed that the Makkah-Taif road (via the Al-Hada mountain pass) recorded 7,642 vehicles. Regarding those coming from Jeddah Governorate, the number of vehicles crossing via the Makkah-Jeddah road (Bahra) reached 6,935, while the direct Makkah-Jeddah road saw 3,056 vehicles, and the Al-Lith road recorded 13,430 vehicles, reflecting the smooth flow of traffic and the well-planned distribution of traffic volume.

The strategic dimensions of a successful Hajj season and its global impact

The successful management of traffic and the influx of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims during the Hajj season is of paramount importance and has far-reaching implications at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, this success reflects the strength of Saudi Arabia's infrastructure and the efficiency of its national workforce in crowd management, aligning with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to host increasing numbers of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims and provide them with the best possible services. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's ability to secure and regulate the movement of such a massive number of vehicles and individuals within a specific geographical area and a short timeframe sends a reassuring message to the entire Muslim world regarding the safety of the pilgrims. It also reinforces the Kingdom's position as a global leader in crisis and mass crowd management.

Continued field readiness to ensure the safety of pilgrims

In its concluding remarks, the General Authority for Roads affirmed its continued operational and field readiness around the clock on all roads leading to the Holy Sites. Specialized teams are monitoring traffic flow in real time using the latest technologies, in addition to providing rapid intervention to address any emergencies. These ongoing efforts aim to enhance the safety and services provided to pilgrims, directly contributing to smoother traffic flow and greater comfort, allowing them to focus on performing their rituals in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
