Historical context of Hajj infrastructure development
Historically, since its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has continuously expanded and developed the holy sites. Mecca, in particular, has undergone a series of radical transformations over the decades, from the first Saudi expansions of the Grand Mosque to the construction of complex road networks, bridges, and tunnels that traverse the mountains of Mecca to facilitate the movement of pilgrims. This historical legacy of care and attention culminates today in the use of the latest engineering and operational technologies to ensure the comfort of pilgrims, transforming Mecca into one of the most advanced cities in terms of crowd management and seasonal infrastructure.
Intensive efforts to prepare the tunnels and lighting
The Ministry explained that the field work included upgrading 92 intersections within the bridge network and preparing 62 underpasses for pedestrians and vehicles. In addition, over 110,000 linear meters of road markings and signage were applied, contributing to improved lane visibility and enhanced traffic safety. The Ministry also strengthened the lighting network by activating more than 330,000 lighting units and 150,000 light poles in Mecca and the Holy Sites, creating a safer environment in high-traffic areas and along the main roads and axes leading to the Holy Sites. On-site monitoring and maintenance work continues around the clock to ensure the continued efficiency of the infrastructure.
Supporting smooth traffic flow during the Hajj season of 1447 AH
As part of its operational plans for the 1447 AH Hajj season the construction of over 11 million linear meters of roads and the improvement and development of approximately 74 million square meters of road surfaces. In addition, 123 bridges and 44 pedestrian and vehicular tunnels were made operational, enhancing traffic flow and facilitating smooth movement in Makkah and the Holy Sites.
The role of volunteer work in serving pilgrims
In a related context, the Ministry, through its regional secretariats, has mobilized more than 4,500 male and female volunteers within the municipal volunteer system. This initiative aims to actively participate in serving pilgrims at vital locations, entry points, and roads leading to the holy sites, supporting operational and service efforts during the Hajj season and embodying the values of solidarity and hospitality that characterize Saudi society.
