Important instructions for the safety of pilgrims in Arafat | Hajj

In line with the Saudi leadership's commitment to the safety of pilgrims, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah issued an urgent and direct appeal to all pilgrims in Arafat. The Ministry urged pilgrims to remain in their camps on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah until 4:00 PM. This strategic directive aims to protect their health and safety from direct exposure to the scorching sun during peak hours, effectively reducing cases of heat exhaustion and sunstroke while performing the most important pillar of Hajj.

The historical and spiritual significance of standing at Arafat

The Day of Arafah is considered the most important and fundamental pillar of Hajj, in accordance with the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Hajj is Arafah.” On this solemn day, Muslims from all corners of the earth gather on one plain, setting aside all worldly differences, to raise their hands in supplication to God. Historically, this sacred ground witnessed the Farewell Sermon, which established the principles of human rights and equality in Islam. Because this occasion demands mental and spiritual clarity, providing a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims is of paramount importance, enabling them to dedicate themselves to worship and supplication without hardship or physical strain.

The Kingdom's efforts and its impact in protecting the pilgrims in Arafat

Managing millions of pilgrims gathered in a limited geographical area at the same time is one of the most complex logistical operations globally. Therefore, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's success in organizing this annual event carries significant regional and international implications, reflecting the Kingdom's exceptional ability to manage crises and secure massive crowds. Domestically, all health, security, and organizational sectors are working together to provide the highest quality services. In this context, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has announced that the Arafat Day sermon will be broadcast live via various visual and audio media, with multiple translations, to all pilgrims in the camps. This technological measure allows pilgrims to listen to the sermon with ease and peace of mind, without the need to move around or leave their locations, thus reducing crowding on open roads.

Adherence to approved crowd management plans

To ensure smooth movement, the Ministry urged pilgrims to strictly adhere to the approved crowd management plans and their precise schedules. It stressed the importance of avoiding unauthorized routes and areas not designated for pedestrians. Any deviation from these plans could cause significant disruption to the crowd management system, negatively impacting the flow of movement between holy sites and endangering the lives of others through unnecessary overcrowding.

Warnings against climbing Mount Arafat

In a related matter concerning public safety, the relevant authorities have urged pilgrims to refrain from ascending Mount Arafat during peak hours. This warning stems from the potential for severe overcrowding and stampedes to pose a real risk to the safety of pilgrims, especially the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. The Ministry concluded its directives by emphasizing that strict adherence to these instructions and guidelines directly contributes to the smooth, easy, and peaceful performance of the Hajj rituals, and enhances crowd management efficiency, thus ensuring a safe, healthy, and organized spiritual experience for all pilgrims.
