Opening of the Gold Street stalls in Historic Jeddah – a heritage shopping experience

In a move reflecting the harmony between tradition and modernity, the Ministry of Culture has opened a collection of diverse stalls in the heart of Jeddah's historic , specifically on the famous "Gold Street," as part of its ongoing efforts to revitalize the area and enhance its presence as a global tourist and cultural destination. This initiative is set to become a major attraction for Jeddah residents and visitors alike, offering a unique shopping experience that blends the charm of the past with the spirit of the present.
A shopping experience at the heart of history
The stalls welcome visitors daily from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, offering a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of the old markets for which the "Balad" district was famous. These stalls feature a diverse range of products catering to all age groups, from traditional handicrafts to modern creative products, making them an ideal platform to support local creative industries.
Reviving the historic Hajj route
The choice of location is no coincidence, as this event lies within the historic Hajj route that stretches from Bab al-Bunt (the old port gate) to Bab Makkah. This route holds profound historical significance, as Jeddah has been for centuries the main gateway for pilgrims arriving by sea, and its markets were a vital hub for trade and cultural exchange between the city's residents and the pilgrims. This initiative aims to revive this cultural heritage and connect new generations with their city's rich history.
Historic Jeddah: A World Heritage Site and a Vision for the Future
These events are doubly important given Jeddah's status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. The area is distinguished by its unique architectural style, characterized by stone buildings, traditional houses, and ornate wooden latticework windows. The "Gold Street Stalls" event is part of the Jeddah Historic District Development Program, which aims to transform the area into an open-air museum and a global destination for heritage and arts, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
Supporting the creative and social economy
Beyond its cultural dimension, this initiative contributes to boosting the local economy by empowering small business owners, productive families, and artisans to showcase their products in a vibrant location frequented by thousands. This activation embodies the Ministry of Culture's commitment to supporting community initiatives and creating a dynamic environment, thus solidifying Historic Jeddah's position as a cultural hub that blends rich heritage with sustainable economic and tourism activity.
