Global Water Innovation Award 2025: A Saudi platform leading the world

In a move reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to leading international efforts to address sustainability challenges, the Global Innovation in Water (GPIW) award established itself as one of the most important international platforms in this vital sector. In just three years, this initiative, launched by the Saudi Water Authority in 2023, has become a magnet for innovators and researchers from around the world, exceeding expectations with record-breaking growth figures.
Global context and the importance of the Saudi initiative
This award comes at a critical time, as the world faces escalating water crises due to climate change and rapid population growth. As the world's largest producer of desalinated water, Saudi Arabia is uniquely positioned to lead this technological advancement. The award aims not only to foster competition but also to bridge the significant gap between theoretical research and practical application, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which prioritizes water and environmental security.
Significant leaps in participation figures
Official statistics reveal a remarkable upward trajectory for the award, with cumulative submissions exceeding 600 from academic and research institutions and startups. This growth began with 85 entities in the inaugural edition in 2023, jumping to 199 in 2024, and peaking in the 2025 edition with 316 participants.
Perhaps the most telling indicator of its global reach is the phenomenal increase in applications submitted for the third edition (2025), with over 2,570 applications received from 119 countries , compared to 540 applications from 56 countries the previous year – representing a growth rate exceeding 400% in just one year. This surge in interest reflects the growing international confidence in the Saudi ecosystem as a hub for innovation.
Strict selection criteria and elite competition
Despite its quantitative expansion, the award has maintained rigorous quality standards. A meticulous screening process has resulted in the selection of only 36 innovative projects from 22 countries to reach the final stage, the results of which will be announced next Monday, December 8, in Jeddah. This focus ensures that the shortlisted solutions are not merely ideas, but rather viable projects with economic and technological feasibility.
Innovation Map: From Established Labs to Emerging Markets
The award has successfully brought together leading scientific researchers under one umbrella; the list includes universities and laboratories from technologically advanced countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Japan, as well as emerging nations in the field of water innovation . This geographical diversity enhances opportunities for exchanging expertise and developing solutions suitable for different environments and climates.
Focus on practical solutions
The award stands out for its practical focus, targeting technologies that enhance water efficiency, reduce desalination costs, and improve treatment quality. With an international judging panel comprised of experts and entrepreneurs, the award ensures a balanced evaluation that considers the actual impact of projects, making it a genuine investment platform rather than merely an honorary award, thus contributing to shaping a more sustainable future for water resources globally.
