Germany warns that Ukraine negotiations could fail due to Russian intransigence
Germany has issued serious warnings about the potential failure or collapse of the ongoing negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, pointing the finger at Russia for what it described as its "intransigence" regarding the issue of disputed territories. These remarks were made by German official Johann Wadephul during an official visit to Riga, the capital of Latvia, on Monday, where he highlighted the challenges facing current diplomatic efforts.
The land obstacle and the stalemate in negotiations
Fadevol explained that current indicators are not encouraging, noting that the fundamental condition for the success of any diplomatic process is a genuine willingness on the part of all parties to reach a just peace agreement. He added, in his remarks to journalists, that information emerging from behind the scenes of the negotiations, including the trilateral talks that brought together Russian, Ukrainian, and American delegations last week, reveals Russia's firm adherence to its position on the territorial issue, which the West considers an infringement on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The German official stressed that the lack of Russian flexibility on this crucial issue could lead to two bitter scenarios: either the negotiations will take a very long time, draining resources and lives, or the entire negotiation process will fail at this critical stage, opening the door to further military escalation and continued instability in the region.
