Hussein Al-Ameeshi is developing the traditional palm-frond weaving industry in Al-Ahsa with an innovative engineering approach

Al-Ahsa Governorate, a lush palm oasis and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a cradle of handicrafts that reflect the deep connection between people and the land. At the heart of this heritage, Saudi craftsman Hussein Al-Ameeshi has successfully presented an inspiring model that blends the authenticity of the past with the techniques of the present, by developing the traditional "Arshan" (a type of palm frond) and umbrella making industry through the invention of a unique hand-operated machine eighteen years ago.

Blending engineering with the essence of heritage

Al-Ameeshi didn't limit himself to traditional methods; he sought to innovate solutions that would increase production and accelerate the pace of work. He explained that his innovation involves transforming ordinary palm fronds into folded models using precise geometric techniques, thus facilitating the construction of traditional seating areas, canopies, and rural fences with high durability and an aesthetic touch that reflects the identity of the agricultural region.

This innovative machine was made entirely from local natural materials, as Al-Ameeshi combined wood and palm trunks with some plastic pipes and pulleys to produce a device he called the “folded palm frond,” due to its superior ability to radically change the shape of raw palm fronds and transform them into a sophisticated engineering product.

Historical roots and importance of the palm tree in Al-Ahsa

This industry derives its importance from the deep historical roots of Al-Ahsa Governorate, home to millions of palm trees. Since ancient times, the palm tree has not only been a source of food but also a fundamental element of traditional architecture. The "Arshan" (palm groves) served as summer retreats for farmers and residents of the region, providing natural coolness and ideal ventilation suited to the area's hot climate. Today, Al-Ameeshi's innovation revives this sustainable, eco-friendly architectural style, but in a way that meets the demands of the modern era and tourism projects.

Production cycle and agricultural seasons

The craftsman pointed out that the production process is subject to a precise schedule linked to the agricultural seasons in Al-Ahsa. The raw material is collected during the summer season of "Al-Shuwayh," which is dedicated to cutting palm fronds and pruning the palm trees. The fronds are then carefully stored to ensure their quality and subsequent use according to the needs of various projects throughout the year, thus guaranteeing the sustainability of natural resources and the beneficial recycling of palm waste.

Economic and tourism recovery

Traditional crafts in Saudi Arabia, and specifically in Al-Ahsa, are witnessing remarkable growth in line with the general trend towards promoting cultural tourism. Al-Ameeshi noted that local demand is constantly increasing, with contracts ranging from small-scale projects for individuals to beautify homes, to large-scale projects covering vast areas of farms and rural resorts.

This practical success was demonstrated when Al-Ameeshi set a record for production during his participation in the third “Al-Ahsa Countryside” Festival, where, thanks to his innovative techniques, he was able to implement sixty-eight integrated heritage corners, highlighting the economic and practical feasibility of integrating innovation into handicrafts, and the ability of the local product to meet the needs of major events.

Future aspirations and career sustainability

Despite the success he has achieved, Al-Ameeshi aspires to transform his manual machine into an advanced, electrically powered, automated model, calling on the relevant authorities to help him protect his invention with a patent and officially document it to ensure the sustainability of this heritage.

He emphasized that the craft of building traditional huts (arish) remains vibrant thanks to the presence of seasoned artisans like his colleague Youssef Al-Awishi, who play a pivotal role in passing on the secrets and techniques of the trade to the new generation. Al-Awishi extended an open invitation to the youth of the governorate to invest their energies in developing traditional crafts, which represent the living memory of the place and a fundamental pillar of national identity.
