Environment and King Abdulaziz University: Programs to develop agriculture in Rabigh

In a move aimed at promoting sustainable development and achieving food security, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Rabigh Governorate, in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz University branch, explored ways to leverage knowledge-based innovation and scientific research to enhance the efficiency of the agricultural sector in the governorate. This initiative aligns with national directives to integrate academic expertise with practical field experience.
Fruitful cooperation to serve development
This came during a meeting between Engineer Radah Al-Qarzi, Director of the Ministry's office in Rabigh, and Dr. Marwan Khimi, Supervisor of the Knowledge Innovation Sector at the university branch. During the meeting, the two discussed a joint roadmap aimed at translating academic theories and scientific research into tangible, practical applications that directly benefit farmers and support the sustainability of natural resources in the region.
Keeping pace with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This partnership is particularly important given the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on developing the agricultural sector and increasing its contribution to non-oil GDP. Through initiatives such as "Saudi Green" and the National Transformation Program, the Kingdom seeks to adopt smart farming technologies to conserve water and increase productivity, a key focus of the discussions between the Ministry and the University.
Building national talent and localizing technology
Both sides agreed to launch a package of research initiatives and intensive training programs aimed at building a national workforce specializing in modern agricultural technologies. These programs aim to bridge the gap between educational outcomes and the needs of the growing environmental and agricultural labor market. Investing in human capital is a fundamental pillar for ensuring the continued development of this vital sector.
The importance of innovation in modern agriculture
The two officials affirmed their commitment to exchanging expertise to promote the concept of “smart agriculture” and transfer technical knowledge to local farmers. This collaboration is expected to introduce modern agricultural methods that will help overcome climate challenges and improve the quality of local produce, thus benefiting farmers in Rabigh Governorate economically and strengthening the governorate’s position as a vital contributor to food security in the region.
