Eid al-Fitr holiday dates for health sector employees 1447 and the duration of the official holiday

The Saudi Ministry of Health has officially announced the approved dates for the start and end of the Eid al-Fitr holiday for healthcare workers for the year 1447 AH, in accordance with the directives issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. This announcement aims to regulate workflow in healthcare facilities and ensure the continuity of medical services for citizens and residents during the blessed Eid period, while taking into account the differences in employment regulations between the civil service and self-employment sectors.
Details of vacation dates according to job categories
The ministry explained that the determination of holiday days varies based on the employee's job classification, and the details are as follows:
- Employees subject to the Civil Service System: They will receive a leave of 12 days, starting at the end of the workday on Thursday, 23 Ramadan 1447 AH, corresponding to 12 March 2026 AD, and work will resume on Wednesday, 6 Shawwal 1447 AH.
- Self-employed and contracted employees: This category includes those holding the positions of Undersecretaries, Assistant Undersecretaries, those in the Competency Program, and employees of self-employment programs. Their leave begins at the end of the workday on Wednesday, 29 Ramadan 1447 AH (March 18, 2026), and lasts for six days, with work resuming on Wednesday, 6 Shawwal 1447 AH.
The regulatory framework for official holidays in the government sector
These dates are based on established regulations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important official holidays stipulated by the Civil Service and Labor Laws. These regulations aim to strike a balance between the employee's right to celebrate religious observances and spend time with family, and the public interest, which necessitates regulating periods of rest from work. Government administrative positions typically have longer leave periods compared to technical positions or those subject to the self-employment system, due to the nature of their contracts and operational obligations.
The importance of the continuity of health services during holidays
Unlike purely administrative sectors, the health sector is a cornerstone of national health security, making the Eid al-Fitr holiday for healthcare workers subject to special arrangements that ensure emergency and routine medical services are not affected. Hospital and health center administrations play a pivotal role in preparing duty rosters to cover staffing shortages during the holiday, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to providing continuous, high-quality healthcare around the clock, regardless of official holidays.
Attendance and compensation mechanism for those required to pay
In the context of organizing work during the holiday, the Ministry of Health emphasized the necessity for employees assigned to work during the holiday period to record their attendance and departure via the "Hayyak" electronic service to ensure data accuracy. The Ministry also indicated that employees will be compensated for working during the holiday in the form of compensatory time off, not financial compensation, in accordance with approved regulations and bylaws. This ensures the rights of healthcare practitioners and administrative staff who contribute to patient care during the Eid holidays.
